Liverpool bought by Americans

7 February 2007 By Avinash Meetoo 23 Comments

In case you didn’t notice, Liverpool FC has been bought by George Gillet and Tom Hicks.

Like most Liverpool FC fans, I welcome the money (Chelsea and ManU fans know that without money one cannot win the Premiership) but I’m a little bit afraid of Liverpool being americanized…

Only time will tell…

(An update: this is a Super Liverpool Reds Roster)

(Another update: After one and a half year, most Liverpool fans want the Americans out. George Gillet and Tom Hicks have failed to finance the new stadium and, instead, have increase the amount of debts of the club. In addition to that, they had preliminary contacts with Jürgen Klinsmann (as a replacement for Rafael Benitez) who they discovered while browsing!)

I’m afraid too… but I hope Americans have learned some about football so far. If they use their common sense, Liverpool can grow to be the most important club in the World. Go Reds!

Money isn’t the only thing that makes you win the Premiership :)
But I have to agree that, this will indeed spice up matters

hehe.. lets see who will be the next big signing of Liverpool!!

Me too am afraid..:S but what do we LFC supporters risk?? Against Everton on saturday, we were struggling to get a goal.. and on the bench we had talented players ( in the past ) like fowler, Zenden etc .. joking.. Well i just hope they will bring some good players who will be consistent throughout the next season and not players who talk a long and do little on the field.. You will never walk alone.. lol

F 365 is too good! I really had a laugh with that article.

But one thing I fear is that there’s a possibility we won’t see local lads rising through the ranks, due to big money signings… Personally I prefer a team with God (Fowler), Macca(McManaman), Redknapp, Carra, Stevie G than one with Ronaldinho, Ronaldo and other big names!

hmm i fink that financially speakin we can hardly place man utd, aston villa n now liverpool in the same league as chelski!! However u dun alwayz need to have a fortune to win the league…4giv the pun, but man utd does seem to be givin chelsea a good run for its money this season…aaaaaaaaaaaand we might just win it! ( aaah now woudn’t sayin that b akin to blasphemy on a scouser’s blog? :P)

putting together a team of stars does not make a star team…real madrid’s galacticos have already crumbled, n now the same is happening to chelsea…

but personally i dun really like this taking over business…a FC belongs to the fans, and not to some cheesy businessman who doesnt have a clue bout football n is just lookin to make sum more money!!

The takin over has barely been completed and that gillet bloke has already referred to liverpool as a ‘franchise’…

well as long as they dun meddle with the how the players do their jobs on the pitch it won’t be too bad i fink…The glazers have kept a low profile at man utd and fings have worked out fine so far…

so maybe next season liverpool will actually challenge for the league…lol!

Val, in fact if I’am right, it was the Glazers who referred Manyoo as a franchise while Gillet referred LFC as a club! Check it out :

@ Asvin : If u had read that article well, u would have noticed that the term franchise did crop up late in the press conference…

Just wanted to clear this up and i’m definitely not looking to make of this a typical man utd vls liverpool thing! In my previous post i was just expressing my concern about this new trend of millionaires taking over football clubs, which imho is not that good for the game!

    Peace

Walk on, walk on…with hope in your hearts, and you’ll ALWAYS win nothing!

Money is not a deciding factor for lifting the premiership trophy and it takes much more than consistency to win the premiership. Apart from having LFC shirts and kits being sold in the US and a little more abroad, I find nothing that will benefit Liverpool.

Guess that Liverpool were almost forced to accept this deal because they faced the risk of falling behind the other clubs-speaking of the stadium capacity.
Hope that this do not steal the club’s identity

  11. avinash says

    To ScouseFan:

Money IS the deciding factor to win the premiership (look at Chelsea). And, in case you haven’t noticed, Liverpool won more competitions that any other English team during those past 5 years…

    To Josh:

This is what I’m afraid of. But watching yesterday’s defeat against a poor Newcastle, I realise that we need big money to buy world-class players. And Americans do have some money, aren’t they?

I hope Americans will buy some good players. E.g Michael Owen, David Villa, Andrea Pirlo, etc.

I can’t really comment too much as I don’t support any premiership teams and I can say this that money doesn’t win games and doesn’t win the cups and league, look at Chelsea, they have more world class players than most teams and they won 1 thing, Liverpool have a similar squad from last year and they have a chance to win in Athens, and if Liverpool are soo good as most of you claim why have they not won the league for the past few years, I personally think it’s down to how the players perform, lets look at Manchester United, Lost agains’t West ham, portsmouth and drew a few other stupid games, and they have both world class and the money, they have only won 1 thing, the league.

So in a nutshell, money doesn’t win you the league.

Honestly, I am a Liverpool supporter from the US… have been for years. I am only 20 years of age, but I have done my best to understand the support that LFC fans have given the club for years. I went to the 2006 WC in Germany and that gave me only a slight idea of what support went around, cos I know LFC fans are the best. I have and always will be a Red, even though I live abroad. YOU’LL NEVER WALK ALONE, even if overseas. LONG LIVE RAFA BENITEZ!!!
