A new look for Noulakaz.net

5 May 2008 By Avinash Meetoo 33 Comments

What do you think of the new look of my weblog? I’ve tried to keep things simple while enhancing navigation. I’ve also doubled the number of Google adverts in order to get more money :-)

As you’ve noticed, I’ve used a Mac-inspired theme which I find really nicely done. I’ve also added a Random Posts widget in the right sidebar as I feel that this will allow people to (re)discover ancient posts that might be useful to them. Personally, I’ve just spent 30 minutes reading my old writings and they are not too bad…

I’ve still some work to do. I have to put more obvious links to the photos, music and videos I’ve put online. I’ll do that tonight while the kids are sleeping…

sincerely, the last one was a lot more nicer and peaceful to the eyes..

This one makes you seem like a teenager!

    lol selven :D

its nice the new design and i love blue :P

only thing which for the time being bugs me is the comment :), i think when it was below, it was nicer and easier than now, especially if the topic is long and you are browing the main page ^^

I’m still a teenager (in spirit at least) :-)

In fact, I have changed the theme for two important reason: widgets and a 3 columns layout.

There are many extensions to WordPress now that require a theme supporting widgets (which my old theme didn’t). My old theme (which was nice looking) was created manually at a time when I considered writing my own HTML and PHP kewl… and couldn’t care less of widgets. I thought a lot about enabling widgets on the old theme but then I realised that I wanted a 3 columns layout.
The reason is obviously because I want to experiment with alternative navigation strategies and, for that, I need some additional space compared to a 2 columns layout.

I chose this Mac-inspired theme because (i) it is Mac-inspired, (ii) it supports widgets and (iii) it has 3 columns.

By the way, Selven, can you please tell me if “Subscribe to comments” works for you? Do you get an email when someone comments on one of my posts?

he is a teenager. didn’t you know?

the new layout will probably just need some getting used to. It is a bit narrow on a 1024px display though.

note for more money, try setting the google ads to CPM instead of CPC, pay per view instead of par per click. I don’t use google ads myself but I heard they have a CPM only offer and you can change those settings somewhere. most people have developed a mental block against google ads.

    any chance of having the “5 Comments »” at the end of the topic again :D? or is it fixed with the new template {yeah i am lazy ^^}

I’ll do that tonight while the kids are sleeping…

Am I the only one finding that fishy???! LOL

Well, this one is much cooler… but I would agree with the previous comment saying dat it’s narrow at 1024px…

How many of you use 1024×768? It looks nice on my 1280×800 MacBook…

  10. Ketwaroo D. Yaasir says

nope. subscriptions not working. probably has to do with the php mail() function I think.

Arrogance? Massive self loathing? For having chosen a new theme for my blog? Don’t you think you are somewhat exaggerating?

I wonder what you are going to say when I’ll decide to launch Avism for real :-)

And the theme is “calm and cool”

    I like blue and minimalism.

  19. Ketwaroo D. Yaasir says

    6 May 2008 at 23:55

    “I like blue and minimalism.”

well it’s blue. but not exactly minimalist. All sorts of images in everything.

I write most of my themes myself. be it for wordpress or other stuff. I use only css properties (and very few background images) to make things look nice. That’s also one of the reason I really dislike people who still use IE6 or lower…

oh and the sidebars are wp widget driven. so you can drag the google ads all the way down just to annoy Avinash.

and @ the man himself, its narrow on a 1024 display but its still readable. so don’t worry. and really few people still use 800×600. what is it with you people on your mac books and your wide screens….?

but the subscriptions really is broken. have you tried sending yourself an email via a php script like I suggested?

(SEO tip, push both columns to the right or use only one wide column on the right. googlebot will get to the content of your posts faster. or do like me and use cunning CSS box properties and float to make the html for your posts load immediately after the opening body tag but still have columns on either side. You’ll seriously loathe Internet Explorer though. well… more than usual.)

:p i still prefer the old one. This blue one is horribly painful to the eyes :p

This sounds like the old google page which was simple and minimal and nice looking and compared to the new google page which is now an eye sore!

anywayz back to the reason i posted, i have subscribed to this thread (and another one), but it seems to me that i didn’t receive any mail on new comments :p i guess the subscription isn’t working :p

    @ Kailash

well xml feeds are xml. I think.

I don’t use feed readers much. but I figure they could just apply some XSLT to it to make into whatever colour or shape you want.

er, XSLT; that’s stylesheet for xml. Should be possible.

    lol

  26. Ketwaroo D. Yaasir says

    10 May 2008 at 14:11

    lol?

    what’s so lol about that?

instead of lolling about you could be writing your own rss reader. You’d be learning something for a change. here’s tip, you can do it using nothing but a plain text html file and some javaScript. don’t believe me? well that’s your loss.

something about the theme though, the page a day calendar on the left of the post title is really neat and all but it doesn’t state the year. You could guess the year from the comments but you’d have to view the actual comments too (an extra click per post). And there could be no comments on a certain post or the first comment could have been made years after the actual post. I’m saying this because I found some old post via the random post widget and it’s hard to figure our when you wrote them.

(the theme is pretty but assumes you won’t be using it for more that a year)

  27. avinash says

I’ve also noticed this Yaasir. I’m looking for a fix.

  28. Ketwaroo D. Yaasir says

    10 May 2008 at 15:02

aw, come on. Big boy like doesn’t need to look for a fix. you can do it yourself.

    just search and replace

    <div class="date"><span><?php the_time(‘M’) ?></span> <?php the_time(‘d’) ?></div>

in the index.php of the theme by

    <div class="date"><span><?php the_time(‘M, y’) ?></span> <?php the_time(‘d’) ?></div>

    (I know. I’m a terrible show off)

Although, I’d prefer a long year format. i,e 2008 instead of 08. but you can figure how to do that easily.

  29. avinash says

    10 May 2008 at 15:52

I’ve changed the date format to include the year. It’s not as nice as previously but it is more informative :-)
