My old Canon EOS 6D is still going strong but…

12 May 2025 By Avinash Meetoo Leave a Comment

I purchased my first digital SLR camera, a Canon EOS 60D, on 7 April 2011. We were on vacation in the USA and I had ordered the camera on Amazon to be delivered to a friend’s place.

From the very first photo, I understood that I had entered another world.

Five years later, I got the opportunity to upgrade to a full-frame camera, the Canon EOS 6D. Another friend from the US had settled in Mauritius and was selling his photo gear second-hand. I jumped on the occasion.

I immediately understood why people loved full-frame cameras. With a Canon 50mm f/1.8 STM lens, the result was simply amazing. Over the years, I would perfect my RAW processing workflow to use DxO PhotoLab, ViewPoint and FilmPack.

Unfortunately, all good things need to have an end. The 6D was introduced in September 2012 and, a few days ago, Canon Japan announced that they would stop repairing this camera as from September 2025.

Of course, I still have a fully functional 6D. In fact, it went through a major servicing last year and, in principle, has a few years in its belly.

But, as I have been using a Canon EOS R8 mirrorless camera for some time now, with either my existing 50mm lens or a Canon RF 28mm f/2.8 STM pancake lens we have just purchased to be able to travel light, I wonder whether I will use the 6D again?

Maybe it will just gather dust until it becomes useful again as my old 60D did.

We’ll see.

Trent Alexander-Arnold leaves Liverpool after 20 years

5 May 2025 By Avinash Meetoo Leave a Comment

Trent Alexander-Arnold, the most famous Liverpool player to have worn number 66 on his shirt, has announced that he is leaving Liverpool Football Club at the end of his contract in a few weeks.

He says: “I’ve been here 20 years now, loved every single minute of it, achieved all my dreams, achieved everything I’ve ever wanted to here. Giving everything day in, day out for 20 years, I’ve got to a point now where I feel like I need a change, a new challenge for me as a player and as a person. And I think now is the right time for me to do that.”

After winning two Premier Leagues, one Champions League, one UEFA Super Cup, one FIFA Club World Cup, one FA Cup, two League Cups and one English Super Cup, he really has done everything that a player could dream of.

To be honest, I would have preferred that Liverpool got a transfer fee of some sort but, as an academy player, Liverpool did not pay for him initially. Things tend to balance out. And, to be perfectly honest, football might be a religion for us but, for the players, it’s their job and people need to change jobs and horizons from time to time to grow.

I will always remember Trent Alexander-Arnold, as arguably the best passer of the ball in the world, for his massive contributions to Liverpool’s success over the years, especially what he did during that memorable Champions League semi-final against Barcelona. He scored a lot of goals as well.

I am sad to see him leave. I’m sure Christina, Anya and Kyan are sad too. But Liverpool will ultimately find a replacement and we’ll remember Trent as a legend, same as Steven Gerrard.

I wish Trent Alexander-Arnold all the best.

Liverpool wins the Premier League 2024-2025

27 April 2025 By Avinash Meetoo Leave a Comment

Arne Slot has done something only a few have managed to do before him.

As a manager, he has won the Premier League in his first year in charge of Liverpool Football Club.

Liverpool now has 18 First Division titles and 2 Premier League titles for a total of 20 champions of England titles. It would be interesting to see if Liverpool can win its 21st crown next year.

During the season, and despite some injuries, Arne Slot could count on Alisson Becker as his goalkeeper, Andrew Robertson, Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konaté and Trent Alexander-Arnold as his defenders, Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai as his midfielders & Luis Díaz, Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah as his forwards. These are the 11 players who played the more this year in Arne Slot’s favoured 4-2-3-1 formation (which is an evolution of Jurgen Klopp’s 4-3-3).

Arne Slot also had the following 11 players to rotate during the matches Liverpool played and the manager has earned a reputation for very judicious substitutions. They are Caoimhín Kelleher as goalkeeper, Konstantinos Tsimikas, Joe Gomez, Jarell Quansah and Conor Bradley as defenders, Wataru Endo, Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones as midfielders & Darwin Núñez, Diogo Jota and Federico Chiesa as his forwards.

With Trent Alexander-Arnold leaving on a free soon, Caoimhín Kelleher probably leaving to earn a first-team spot somewhere else and some players either not performing or aging quickly, there will probably be an interesting summer of transfers for Liverpool.

A number of names have been heard such as Milos Kerkez, Dean Huijsen and Jonathan David. Some players are expected to leave, most notably the fan favourite Darwin Núñez.

Let’s wait and see.
