Last night, Christina and I watched the last episode of Schitt’s Creek, a TV show which ran from 2015-2020, and we absolutely loved the whole show which tells the story of “Johnny Rose and his family who go from extremely wealthy to penniless overnight. The only asset left to them is a small, unsophisticated town: Schitt’s Creek. They relocate there. Culture shock ensues.”
Over the five seasons, the four main protagonists, Johnny (the distinguished dad, played by Eugene Levy, also one of the writers of the show), Moira (the irritating mum, played by Catherine O’Hara), David (the sarcastic brother, played by Eugene’s real son, Dan Levy, also one of the writers) and Alexis (the adorable sister, played by Annie Murphy), transform into better versions of themselves by engaging with the people of Schitt’s Creek.

First and foremost, they meet Stevie Budd (the owner of the motel they have to live in, played by Emily Hampshire) and the Schitt couple, Roland (the eccentric mayor, played by Chris Elliott) and Jocelyn (the motherly teacher and leader of the Jazzagals, played by Jennifer Robertson). Hilarity ensures.

Johnny, Moira, David and Alexis also meet Twyla Sands (the kind café owner, played by Sarah Levy), Ronnie Lee (the no-nonsense entrepreneur, played by Karen Robinson) and Bob Currie (who is still waiting for Gwen to come back, played by John Hemphill).

Schitt’s creek portrays homosexuality in a refreshing and very positive light. At no point in time is there any issue with David Rose being gay (Dan Levy is gay in real life) and meeting the love of his life, Patrick Brewer (played by Noah Reid).

For me, the best part of Schitt’s Creek, is Alexis Rose. Annie Murphy is a formidable actress and manages to make one of the funniest but vain initially yet simple, kind and adorable while the show runs. She remains sophisticated and, interestingly, very reasonable. The love story of Alexis with Ted Mullens (the shy veterinarian, played by Dustin Milligan) is very nice.

Alexis’ relationship with David is one of the best sister-brother interaction I’ve ever seen on TV. While their personalities are quite different, the two show a lot of maturity, especially compared to their mother, Moira, who, will being a very important character in the show, sometimes make me feel cringe. She’s way over the top. I like the kids so much more.

Alexis starts by being very naive and childlike. Over the five years, she grows in a lot of different ways: she becomes less naive, more focussed on important matters instead of the futile, and, in many ways, is the one who keeps the family, with Johnny Rose, the dad, going in the right direction. But the bickering with David never stop and it’s hilarious!
We’ll definitely watch Kevin Can F**k Himself next with Annie Murphy as the main actress. I understand she does not play Alexis Rose in that show but I’m sure she’s great as she is a wonderful (and beautiful) actress.
