Becoming fit… and maybe thin

9 September 2008 By Avinash Meetoo 27 Comments

One of the joys of being jobless (for the time being at least…) is that I have ample time to walk, jog and ride my bicycle.

Yesterday I dropped the kids at school and jogged back home. This took me about 15-20 minutes. It was tough as I had not jogged for months… I then took my bicycle and spent the next two hours cycling (Quatre-Bornes to Roches-Brunes to Beau-Bassin to Rose-Hill and back to Quatre-Bornes.) This was an exhilarating experience as I could feel muscles that I thought had completely atrophied. Before you ask, yes, every single of my muscles is aching today :-)

After writing this, I’ll have a light lunch (no fried or boiled noodles today!) with Christina and do a bit of cycling in the vicinity of Quatre-Bornes. If I manage to exercise everyday then I’m sure that I’ll become much fitter… and, maybe, thinner.

    If you really want to get into shape very quickly, in my opinion there is nothing better than Squash. After 45 mins on a squash court you will really feel like you are working muscles you did’t even know existed!

    As for the tired and aching muscles afterwards, I have learnt through experience that you need to do a proper warm down just as you do a proper warm up before doing any sort of exercise.

    gud luck for that, its been years since i have been trying at that :p but if you are an eater, then i suppose in the end you won’t be able to resist your tongue and resume to eating twice as much as you used to consume before you started exercising and controlling your food :p..

    if you do succeed … then i guess i am wrong and lazy

    Fantastic. Keep yourself fit. It hurts at first, but then you get used to exercising.

    What do you think of when exercising? Some believe that it clears the mind. I think not – it doesn’t blank the mind. It makes you think more of stuff. Do you think of things while exercising?

    Thanks for your comments :-)

    To Harish: My brother wanted me play squash some years ago but, unfortunately, we never managed to do it… Do you know of any squash court somewhere near Quatre-Bornes?

    To Selven: True. Decreasing your food intake and drinking a lot of water are the most important things to do. And I think that I’m doing well: I’ve stopped eating all those oily dishes we, Mauritians, tend to eat daily (like fried noodles.) I don’t know if I’ll manage to control myself for long but I like to think that I have enough will power ;-)

    To Shah: While cycling, I listen to music on my iPod and have ample time to think about the beauty of our country. In fact, I like discovering new places while cycling.

    To L:): Kudos to all Muslims who are fasting right now. I remember when I was a student participating in a football competition and losing to other students from the Comoros. They beat the Mauritian team comprehensively and they were all fasting and didn’t drink a drop of water. We were amazed ;-)

    another way to loose weight without spending too much time is to increase your metabolism speed

    you can try weight training also..
    haha might seem like odd advice coming from a curvy guy but there was a time where i lost around 16kg

    unfortuantely i took them back due to stress and workload at uom..

    Now life seem a bit stable and am starting again as from tomorrow :P

    avinash, there is a squash court at the gymkhana club in vacoas. Since you’re planning to move away, you probably wouldn’t want to become a member. Perhaps however, you may have a friend who happens to be a member.

    Additionally… I think it is great to reduce your food intake. Perhaps you should as well reduce the amount of complex carbohydrates such as bread, pasta or cereal. These types of food are high in calorie content and from what I read make it harder to shed weight.

    Proteins and yoghurt I read facilitate muscle regeneration. Nuts are good as well.
    Work the leg muscles, they are amongst your biggest muscle groups. Bigger muscles == more energy intake + increased metabolic rate.

    Good luck!

    To Shailen:

    Quitting smoking? Not really. Does it have an incidence on weight?

    To all:

    By the way, I’m not trying to become slim. I’m only trying to become fit. I’ve realised that I am too sedentary. Running and cycling a little bit will, at least, make me spend less time in front of this damn (but oh so great) MacBook :-)

    Unfortunately no I don’t know of any squash courts near Quatre-Bornes, but I have heard on the grapevine that there are some squash courts available in the private clubs, as to which ones exactly I couldn’t tell you. Also there have been studies which do show that smoking does indeed increase weight gain, and of course if you stop smoking your lungs will start performing as they were designed to :).

    Hi,
    trying to become I can only say “Mange Bien!”. What I really mean is that eat healthy food rich in vitamins and minerals. I heard it is recommended to have 5 vegetables and 5 fruits per day. And to add, drink plenty of water.

    An advice that I once got:
    “Le matin mange kuma le roi (petit dej)
    La journer manger kuma someone moderately rich (dejeuner)
    Le gouter mange kuma ene dimoune average
    Le soir mange kuma mandiant (dinner)”

    I believe it’s a good principle but quite tough to follow. And normally, we tend to do otherwise. Personally, I prefer to have a variety (3-6) fruits as dinner instead of the normal/usual dishes served for dinner.

    Rope skipping as well is not a bad idea…since while doing so…we work out all the parts of our body.

    With Thanks,
    Kind Regards,
    Chaya

    Thanks Chaya for this great tip. True. We tend to eat too much for dinner. A few years ago, I stopped eating rice / bread / pasta etc. for dinner and noticed, after just a few weeks, that I was losing weight. Unfortunately, I couldn’t manage to do this for long.

    I need to try again… as from tonight :-)

    PS: Today I jogged for 15-20 minutes (not much) and cycled for 1:30h. I think it’s the first time in my life I’ve been cycling (relatively) intensively for 3 days running.

    All the best Sir!
    But don’t be too harsh towards yourself but instead adopt a progressive way of doing things. Like let’s say for example, everynight you have the typical mauritian dish and you are used to having 2-3 buns. Instead of having 3, have two and replace the other one by some fruits or salad. After getting used to this routine, decrease another component of the meal and replace by something healthier. Like this you are sure to succeed and not get back to the usual dishes.

    Slowly but surely….

    With Thanks,
    Kind Regards,
    Chaya

    at L :)

    dude, if you don’t do enough chest execises and start eating low carbs items then there’s no way you are going to lose those.

    hmm.. at avinash on the comment about the macbook.. hmmm c pas aussi extra ordinarei que sa 1 macbook, its small, limited usb ports and not enough keys, and on top of which its not sexy.

    hmm seeing the way this thread is moving … you seem to be a really lazy lazy guy when it comes to sport… i myself think of that as normal activities… am sure probably it is due to the fact that you own a car.

    here’s an approximately normal day for me:

    wake up late;
    do everything rushingly;
    15 minutes of jujitsu heating up [ i never managed to get pass the heating up];
    bath & eat (2 dish rice + 1 bread + 1 bowl corn flakes);
    around 50Metres Sprint after the bus because am late [as always];
    Do some homework or read something in the bus [ or look at the gals around ];
    Bus arrives in univ, am late for class, run before its too late that i get embarassed infront of the whole class by getting their late;
    after class, spending several hours with my bag on me while I “arpente” the campus;
    Eat random stuffs;
    ……. its getting late.. ohh god the last bus for home is already leaving.. sprint after it.
    back at home, if i don’t feel lazy get in my gym room, else eat eat eat and watch movies or do something interesting;

    now that’s called a normal day for me :p am sure if you tried living like that you sure will not need to select 1 day to cycle a lot to cover everything up in one day. Break your car, break your bike, hide your money… this way when you’ll need to go out, you shall have to walk to the place [or jog :p] and soon you’ll be in perfect condition :p.

    ps. if you like to eat, then you won’t be able to stop it [unless you put in lots and lots of effort].. food is like drugs [its just more addictive], you may think you can stop making your tongue happy … but in the end, after 3 weeks you’ll forget and once you start you’ll again start to think “hell why did i even stopped!”

    To Chaya:

    I’ve noticed that I eat less now. I’ve also noticed that I drink a lot of water all day long.

    I think this is psychological. I was telling my wife the other day that I’ve been thinking of starting exercising for more than one month now. I think I was getting mentally ready to have an activity when I would be jobless. Now that I have lots of free time, I don’t feel bored at all as I am (more or less) exercising every day.

    To Selven:

    I remember when I was a student in an engineering school in France that sports was compulsory. Sometimes, it was tough doing sports and studying at the same time but we did it because, well, it was compulsory. Now I can see the value of Mens Sana in Corpore Sano…

    To Kurt:

    It’s not my bicycle. I was at Trou aux Cerfs when I made that picture. Mine is a Peugeot mountain bike (VTT) with a 18-speed Shimano gear system I bought in 1999 when I returned to Mauritius.

    Interestingly, I bought the bicycle at that time because I did not have a car. I used it to go to Christina’s place at Roches-Brunes more or less daily (fréquenté.) Then I returned home in Quatre-Bornes after dinner. At that time, I was pretty lean…

    I wonder if the solution to mental and physical health is to get rid of one’s car :-)

  21. selven says

    14 September 2008 at 12:27

    it would have been cool if sports was compulsory here, IF and only IF Pétanque was considerred a sport here AND one was free to choose whatever ‘sport’he wants to take part in :p

    [am happily enjoying a lazy quiet life, massive sports is when i start to get old and having symptoms that could mean i am nearing some health trouble] :p

    Car is bad for health. It make a human become lazy lol. Look at the chinese in china they use their bicycle..and its more economic and good to exercise too :-)

    Ah maybe that’s why married man tend to be ‘fatter’ than bachelors…. =)

    As for me, I used to cycle around Port Louis on Sundays, but had to give it up coz of exams and never started again (laziness, lack of security…) I tried several activities before running out of will power and surrendered to my pc =P

    To console myself, I keep repeating to myself that I’m not getting fat, that it was the world that was getting thin ;-)

    Well wish u luck and who knows, maybe I’ll follow your example…

    That’s true…There’s a psychological aspect in whatever new you do.

    I remember my brother,once,telling me “met dan to la tete ki to malade ek ki to pa pu ale lesson/lekol” and eventually when I really did this, it turned out that I was not feeling my actual self (odd feeling) and I didn’t go to tuition.

    In everything we do or plan to do, our psychology has a great impact on whether we do it well or otherwise.

    Cheers

    Chaya
