Political illiterates in Quatre-Bornes

30 June 2008 By Avinash Meetoo 61 Comments

Found this in Quatre-Bornes while driving to work today… Where do I begin?

First, this is an eyesore. It hurts my senses so much that I felt compelled to get off my car, take a photo and blog on it.

Secondly, the one who has written this is an illiterate. Come on. “Nous Somè Fier Deton Sucses Sitanen”. He (must be a he!) cannot even get Sithanen right! Stupid guy!

Thirdly, what is the objective of that message? If the perpetrator thinks that this message will flatter Sithanen then he is wrong. This kind of stupid message can only tarnish the image of Sithanen according to me as it makes me associate the current Minister of Finance with a bunch of illiterate painters… and nothing more.

    I’d guess it’s a combination of…

sending too many text messages on his mobile phone to his political die-hard buddies….

and.. running out of pro-political posters that seem to find their way at almost every single corner street of the island..

i dun fink that this is the work of labour partisans…especially not in qbornes. Very clever of those who did it, coz let alone the fact that writing graffitis in bold red does not in anyway promote the labour party, it achieves quite the opposite!

I think the writings on the wall show a bigger problem: education. The person who did this did not have proper education. He (girls don’t usually do this in Mauritius) or they (could well be a group) would know how to write properly, and would not have done it in the first place if he/they had received good education.

Vishal mentioned that this might have been done by partisans of the opposition to tarnish the image of Sithanen. Can this be true?

I have some doubts. I know political agents well (as my father was a politician and diplomat for years.) Most of them are not well educated. Mind you, I am not talking about the ti-dimoun here. I’m talking of the mid-level agents. I don’t think they are subtle (and intelligent) enough to devise something so complex :-)

At first sight of that graffiti, you are most sure that this has been done by ethnic minorities guys from poor family background with low level of education.

Since Drake has not dared reply, I will have to assume that he was referring to poor un-educated Chinese with poor or no family support. Everybody knows that Chinese are the ethnic minority in Mauritius.

could be “nous som’e fier”. that’s what happens when you don’t use spellcheck.

illiterate is a rather a big word though. the thing with spending too much time on a computer is that I haven’t spoken/written any french in years. and recently discovered I couldn’t remember much of it. “parce qu’il” or “par-ce qu’il” or neither? I can’t even speak french properly any more. I’ve developed a slightly american accent apparently…. see this post. I believe it to be relevant. Did you know that creole is a horribly undefined language? you can use it pretty much any way you like as long as you get your point across. (like Perl really…)

you shouldn’t mutilate someone based on how little they know but on how much they defaced your wall ( or how stupid they act, if you prefer).

Meaning that whoever did that graffiti is still an idiot. and that house owner should probably clobber them a bit. at least until some of their internal organs stop working.

    @Drake: Define “ethnic minorities” please.

I saw that remark yesterday, I wanted to tell you not to start pinking of small details again. But then thought there wasn’t much point interfering. but since I’m commenting anyway,

ethnic minority is a generalisation but saying that someone is from an ethnic minority is poor and illiterate is not the same as saying that everyone from that same ethnic minority is poor and illiterate. that last jump is done by whoever wants to do it. you can get offended/traumatised by whatever you want. whether Drake meant the one or the other, I don’t know really. Does it even matter?

Since Drake has not dared reply Contratulashuuuns! you’ve just terrorized an anonymous with your superior reasoning muscle. you have won the internets.

    [/trust me, it’s funny.]

A somewhat similar situation; a friend of mine had “NIGGER” graffitied on her car because she had an “I heart Obama” sticker on it. who did it? those fukken stupid illerate drunk ethnic minority rednecks with their llamas, of course. And of course you don’t get the point. oh well…

someone made vandalised a wall and some public infrastructures in an attempt at sarcasm(probably sarcasm) and most of you will get hung up on syntax. perpetrators should be shot. not given grammar lessons. it’s probably an interesting human behaviour thingie though.

anyway, the reason I’m writing this comment:

Vishal wrote in 5 i dun fink

aha! you are caught red handed! It was you who did it!

I don’t know if this has been written by people of some “ethnic minority”. And I don’t think this is relevant to the discussion we are having.

One interesting question is whether those who “ordered” this thought that this would have a positive effect on Sithanen’s image in Quatre-Bornes?

  21. Ketwaroo D. Yaasir says

Ethnic minorities are especially afro carribean, the working class people (As it is mentioned in my book) Chinese are not ethnic minorities.
Well, but who ordered to do this? Thats Avinash question. Maybe some people(with low level of education of course, afro carribeans as i mentioned above )
have done this because they don’t go to school, and therefore spend their time do deviant/criminal acts.

I saw that remark yesterday, I wanted to tell you not to start pinking of small details again. But then thought there wasn’t much point interfering. but since I’m commenting anyway,

@Yaasir: Often times, certain words are used without much consideration to the effect they have on others. Drake’s message could have been well-intentioned but expressed inadequately. I was giving him a chance to clear any mis-understanding before I make an opinion of him.

I don’t consider this to be “picking on details”. Actually, I find your impassivity to Drake’s remark rather disconcerting. When there is a problem, it should be tackled instead of being pushed aside and ignored. I believe that kind of indifference does not help the nation rid itself of the many wrongs that plague it.

The defacement of this poor homeowner’s fence is a classic example. If this crime is not reported, such actions will soon pass as acceptable. One way to try and suppress them is to report this case to the personality most obviously involved, Minister Sithanen.

    [/trust me, it’s funny.]

No, I don’t find “you have won the Internets” (and likes) funny anymore. I did when I read it the first time, but it’s just a meme now. Zero point to you for originality.

Now, this is for future reference so that you don’t piss me off with your trying-to-be-funny-but-fail-miserably comments in the future.

If you have a point to make, just state it. Don’t start with a lame joke, or whatever, before you get to the gist of the matter. Actually, the fewer words you use to express it, the better, and the more likely I will take you seriously.

@Drake: Now that you have replied, you have made it worse for yourself. It seems that our assumption was correct and that you were actually pin-pointing a certain demographic in your statement. The question you have to answer now is how a mere picture brought you to the conclusion that said ethnic minorities are responsible for this defacement? Never mind that you also seem to know that they are from poor families.

  27. Ketwaroo D. Yaasir says

    2 July 2008 at 17:20

    @ eddy.

impassivity? yes. that’s a way to put it. You can also call it good ol fashion so-fucking-whatism. The only people who would want to get offended by a mere pair of words like “ethnic minority” are those who believe that they are part of an “ethnic minority” and are ashamed of it. there’s probably a better word. like they think it’s a weakness. something they have to protect.

you were rather quick to mention chinese. do you consider yourself to be chinese? does the word ‘minority’ make you feel threatened? Do I make you feel threatened? Is that why you react so aggressively? look around you, you idiot. You’re all the same. what ethnicity are you looking for? Just a bunch of people on an island, that’s all. I’m not even talking about that ‘mauritianism’ thing. Get along or bicker, you can do what you want. You can expect to be treated back in kind of course.

Still, I’ll explain a little bit: friend gets ‘NIGGER’ painted on car. other friend pat on back. says ‘must be ’em white-trash racist bastards’.

IF then pops out of nowhere a quidam who asks “define white-trash please”

I don’t know about the rest of you, but that sounded rather curt. A calculated provocation. like an ass is trying to start an argument. (note that the ‘ass’ is written in flat tone, on the same level as the other words.) The quidam wants to divert the subject to something a lot of other quidams will happily get mad at without even having any reason to get mad at anything. It just doesn’t matter. It’s all in your heads.

I was giving him a chance to clear any mis-understanding before I make an opinion of him.

ok… I see… tell me then… who the fuck do you think you are? (for ‘fuck’ see ‘ass’) giving people chances? for you to form an opinion? why should anyone give a shit about your opinion of them. (for ‘shit’, see ‘ass’, ‘fuck’). rather arrogant.

which bit of [/trust me, it’s funny.] did you miss in the bit you quoted? all the &codes get tedious at times so I just used square brackets. Just because the world isn’t an enjoyable place for you any more that it should be the same for others. I find funny things to be funny. You lose, Mr. frowny face. (and I don’t even use smilies)

and the more likely I will take you seriously.
You got your bolded text wrong. Is that something like a threat?(I loled) I already don’t even like you. Why would I even try to make you take me seriously? you are not the centre of the universe, kiddo. I just like to write the way I like to write. I don’t (usually) intend to educate or save anyone. you think I’m only jokes, welll, I can’t tell you much then, can I? If offence you want to take, then have as much as you like. It’s on the house. you’re too easy to piss off, it’s your issues, not mine.

But I quite like flames. Flames are cool.

to Avinash, sorry about all that. But I will always reply to any direct (or semi direct) incitation. Makes you blog look rather lively, eh?

I don’t have anything to add though on the blog post subject. Except I think they’ve already removed some of the graffiti. Or at least it seems that way for the one on the bank near the bus station.

that sort of thing happens a lot. I mean political vandalism. A relative once had his store front splashed in purple paint during a general election. Some people get rather excited by the darnest things.

for sithanen, with all the bad press his budget is getting, there are a lot of disgruntled people here and there. maybe even in the private sector? maybe even some of those “ethnic minorities” (ha ha ha. get over it.). Anyone could have suddenly flipped and decided to ‘take action’. It’s possible it was not ordered as you say.

  28. Eddy Young says

    2 July 2008 at 18:55

He may have missed a few french classes, but at least he’s got a legible handwriting! Hehehe…Ain’t so easy writing straight this big on a curvy wall! What a waste of talent: he should have been a painter instead! ;) (Or, even better…do some wall painting animation on public walls – http://www.vimeo.com/993998 )…

To deter those partisans from writing brain-dead slogans in red (and prevent any possible colour/political affiliation), all walls throughout the country should be painted red!!! That should make them really happy! Well, at least for some time… ;)

Seriously, guys…Stop feeding the trolls! Let’s put an end this ridiculous discussion on racial, social or whatever stereotypes and get back to the subject matter, shall we?

    @Drake:
Just like LaSh pointed out, you must be a highly biased person. I don’t know where you have taken your sociology class–I took mine at the University of Waterloo, Canada)–, but “ethnic minority” does not necessarily mean “Afro-Carribean.” Its meaning differs depending on where you are. If you are not Afro-Carribean, and go to an Afro-Carribean country, you’ll be part of the ethnic minority. If you don’t believe me, type “ethnic minority” in http://www.dictionary.com and you’ll get “a group that has different cultural traditions from the main population.” I wonder who wrote your sociology textbook. And by the way, Chinese people are considered ethnic minority in Canada.

You were pretty quick to jump to the conclusion that this was done by Afro-Carribean people, because “they don’t go to school, and therefore spend their time do deviant/criminal acts.” Do you sometimes think before saying/doing anything? Do you realise that the term Afro-Carribean does not apply to Mauritius, but rather Afro-Mauritians?

I feel sad for you, and just like LaSh said, pity!

I agree there violence in the country is the result of some groups of people/youngsters not going to school – but then is it FAIR to group all of them under ONE social status/ethnic group?

I don’t think ALL of those who don’t go to school / spend their time in crime are from the “Afro Carribeans” group.

I, too, was wondering why he was using the term Afro-Carribeans. He was so eager to trust his textbook without thinking. What he did not realise was that each textbook is written for a particular audience. An Economics book written for American students is not the same as an Economics book written for British or French students.

@Lash. when you accept that at a quantum level everything in the universe is connected, there is no such thing as irrelevance.
proof: comment no 36, if not edited out later on request, is an absolute déja-vu. A wink from the interconnectedness of all things with a vengeance. (@ avinash, you really should consider that comment editing plugin now)

since most people live by a set of fictions they call reality. the reality of one can be the fiction of the other. Just by iterating a bit, you can explain quite a few fictions. or rather, make a fiction of your own out of the realities of others. If a majority adheres to a fiction it becomes a truth. Believe hard enough in one fiction and others will start believing in much more that you ever did. you get stuff like religions with that. I go by my own fictions too. it could be summarised as, there are the things you can do and there are the things you can’t do. Then again, I can’t be bothered to follow any ‘truth’ forever in the same way I can’t be bothered to have the same favourite music track all the time.

that Drake character may be just another passing idiot. but that isn’t my concern. That’s drake’s problem. you could say that my concern with Eddy, if there is one, is that, to me at least, he comes off as an arrogant prat. And I’ve never really liked arrogant prats. of course, I’m a bit arrogant meself( I never said I was a nice guy, did I?). Except that I know that everything that I can say or thing can be completely wrong at any time. wrong in your fictions only, of course.

it wasn’t spay paint though. the one I saw in town centre seemed to have been made with a brush.

to me that kind of incident shows the importance of having a dog. or maybe a thick barb wire mesh inside a bamboo hedge instead of a wall.

and typing fuck and other swear words these days isn’t that bad. too much south park and die hard probably. I don’t usually use swear words. but it doesn’t mean that I’d feel odd about using them if felt like it. ‘civilized’ is just another fiction. And I’m not attractive. I usually introduce myself as totally evil anyway.

The chineese community in mauritius can be considered to be a minority but yet is quite well educated [conte laureat tous les l’années zanfan :P]. Poverty [which does not alwayz equate to lkack of education!!] touches all the communities here in mauritius, likewise for lack of education.

‘Educated’ people are not immune to doing stupid things. that’s another fiction. In fact they usually think out their stupidity and convince themselves that what they are doing is right because they have their ‘education’ to back them up.

Some ‘uneducated’ are much nicer. simpler. less convoluted. Then again some can be tricked into a perpetual state of want because they think they lack something. wouldn’t it be great to live a simpler kind of life? some sheep. a farm. a dog. on a sunny day under a tree.

how does all this political mumbo jumbo relate to a blog about, teaching, programming Technology and Web 2.0 and wankerism?

Wankerism. The only viable political view in the Universe of Time, Space and Probablility. No right-minded wanker would be out at some godforsaken hour of the night splashing paint. He (or she. let’s be fair about this) would be at home. wanking.

I was going to delete this last comment because of (i) it being anonymous and (ii) the overall tone but I decided to publish it.

Créol is not a “pourriture de langue”. As far as I know, all Mauritians know Créol. It’s my mother tongue and I’m proud of it. As proud as a Frenchman is of French or a Englishman is of English. Nevertheless, I generally use English on my blog because of its universal reach — I would have used Créol if it was understood by (mostly) everyone on the planet…

As for “effet Obeegadoo”, I have no clue of what this is.

    Shame on you.

Like Avinash, I’m proud of my mother’s tongue. Even though I live in Canada, you can be sure my kids will speak Creole at home. I won’t be very happy if they speak to me in English.

Avinash wrote a great reply, and there is little to add to that.

I would like Creole to be formalised so that it becomes easier to write and read. I believe teaching our children in their mother tongue will diminish the struggle that is learning new concepts in a foreign language that they don’t master and improve their education.

I would like Creole to be formalised so that it becomes easier to write and read. I

as far as i know, there’s already a standard dictionary for creole.. was launched around 3 years ago (or 2 years ago).. correct me if i am wrong.

as far as the ethnic minority thingy… whoever said that… must really be someone with lil or no logical brain.

and for what has been written.. :p political leaders give in some money down in the chain to his agents to market and show a sense of “success for the budget” [its impotant to show the population that “most of them are happy with it” (whether true or not, we don’t care), the agent get the money, the agent will take 80% of that money in his own pockets, that remaining 20% is distributed among area agents, and those area agents will give a few drunkards he knows in the area a bottle of no.1 and some paint, and the latter has to write what was told to be written :p

so the % of the latter not knowing how to write is very high.

but then :p i can’t look down on em, i myself write like am high and talk like i am stoned.

As far as political things whether one did that to tarnish the other… who cares? its not like the political leaders are enemies with each other… kill and die for their sake that’s the role of pawns, i don’t give a damned about whether someone is doing it for or against another party… coz probably if it was done on my wall, the guy would’ve been fed paint till he has to go on detox.

who cares if creole is a ‘pourriture de langue’-that seems to be a one-man opinion!!. for me i say language doesnt make a difference as long as you have a brain to generate thoughts and to control ur tongue.

lately when i go back in mauritius on holiday and hang around some of those said -highclass-places in mauritius i hear a new language-les ‘je te dis sa bonom’-et les ‘franc franc tout!!’ is that an attempt to stop speaking this ‘pourriture de langue?’ is this language better than our creole? i doubt it.

lets not be to poss to make as if we’ve never heard it. it would be safe to say we’ve all here heard it in our lives and understands whats being said when others speaks creole!!even chinese in china understand creole these days(believe me ive heard it firsthand or should i say firstear!).
personally i am proud to say i understand 3 languages when i meet foreigner cause lets face it-they will never ever be able to learn my dear creole cause its too difficult for them…..so yipppee i have an advantage over them.
