Your top five songs… today

12 April 2008 By Avinash Meetoo 11 Comments

I came across an interesting thread on Amazon where people were discussing about their top five favorite songs. What is cool is that they all said that they couldn’t possibly list their top five songs ever as, I quote, “these change weekly or as the mood strikes”.

This is my current top five songs today:

  1. Fischerspooner - A Kick In The Teeth
  2. Yael Naim – Toxic
  3. Faithless – Reverence
  4. Daft Punk - Television Rules The Nation / Crescendolls
  5. Porcupine Tree – Hatesong

Incidentally, all the above links point to Last.fm which is, IMHO, a fantastic social networking site for music lovers. Personally, it has allowed me to discover countless artists through its recommendation engine and by exploring the playlists of people having similar music taste as me. Give it a try!

This is my own artist page (yep!) on Last.fm. By the way, some people say (and I think it’s true) that good computer scientists are also good musicians and vice-versa. Apparently, this has something to do with structured reasoning. What I personally know is that I derive the same kind of pleasure playing some music and writing a program…

The picture above shows David Gahan and Martin Gore of Depeche Mode, my favorite music group by very very far…

they all said that they couldn’t possibly list their top five songs ever as, I quote, “these change weekly or as the mood strikes”.

its…. a self evident truth I’m afraid… You don’t really need to read about it anywhere. Just be asked the question a couple of time.

Except of course, there are people who may have a few favourite song of all times. Could be something with special meaning for them or something.

    it depends.

I’d go on but it has to do with the interconnnectedness of all things and ipso facto everything. so it would take a while.

anyway in the spirit of following patterns and not making too many inconsequences..

    no order in particular:

Aiko Ikuta – Dreamship (randomly started playing while I was typing this. I like it mostly because of the contect in which I first heard it)

Procol Harum – … (well quite a few of them actually. If I had to name one: She Wandered Through The Garden Fence)

Pixies – River Euphrates(could be an all time favourite, along with Hey!)

Bloc Party – The Prayer (no reason but for randomness of playlist. It’s up to the minute stuff)

Oliva Ruiz – La Fille Du Vent (see above)

There’s a whole lot more. 5 seems arbitrary, no?

Yes. Could have been 4 or 6 :-)

Anyway, what’s important is that most of us do NOT have 5 favorite songs ever… If there is one thing which is always true, it is “il n’y a que les imbéciles qui ne changed jamais d’avis…”

I’m with you about Depeche Mode. I was going to say that “Enjoy the Silence” (the original) was their best but then I remembered “Leave in Silence” and then “Somebody ” (just vocals with a background piano) and then, and then …. Well forget it, all of their songs are great :-)

lately i have been listening mostly to sad songs rather than anything motivating enough.

:D but as long as there’s a piece of violin in em, am happy :D

Indeed, it’s a whole lot easier to list one’s all time favourite albums…

I don’t know about good scientists being good musicians, but it certainly is true that a lot of people working in the IT industry, play at least one instrument.

I gotta exactly 427 albums(for the moment), and i can tell you that mauritian’s taste about music is really crappy(no offense),just like our internet. But a the end of the day, a band’s real success, is measured by the people who know your work, your art, and know what you stand for.

For many artists success is listening to 1000000 fans singing their words and humming along to the music. That is real success. All bands who think that piracy is hurting them, they already lost. Real successful bands would give you the album away, and wouldnt care about money and interviews. Just a question to see where you mauritian are sitatuated in the world of music. Who (do you think) is the best drummer actually in the world?(dont try to search on engines)
