May The Force Be With You, Mr Bruno Julie!

18 August 2008 By Avinash Meetoo 38 Comments

22 August 2008 Update II: Bruno Julie has earned a Bronze medal for all of us!

Bruno Julie lost on points against the Cuban. Even though I am completely ignorant of boxing techniques, I felt that Bruno Julie was tired at the end. The TV commentator suggested that the referee made a mistake but, frankly, I don’t have a clue…

The most important thing is that Bruno Julie is officially now the first ever Mauritian to earn a Bronze medal at the Olympics. It will be years (at least 4 more) before another Mauritian tries to equal this so this is a fantastic achievement. Congratulations to you, once more, Mr Bruno Julie!

My wife, my two kids and myself will be at the SSR International Airport to welcome Mr Bruno Julie to Mauritius! Who is coming?

22 August 2008 Update I: Bruno Julie’s fight at 15:31 today!

Today, at 15:31, a lot of Mauritians will stop whatever they are doing and watch Bruno Julie’s fight against Yankiel Leon Alarcon of Cuba during the first semi-final of the 54Kg boxing competition at the 2008 Beijing Olypics.

Bruno Julie is already sure of winning a Bronze medal at least. And this is a first for our tiny country, Mauritius. I sincerely hope that Bruno Julie’s performance will make Mauritians realize the importance of preserving our unity and working towards the same goals and objectives. Allé Bruno! Allé Maurice!

18 August 2008 Update: The first ever Olympic medal for Mauritius!

Bruno Julie has won convincingly. Therefore, he is the first ever Mauritian to obtain an Olympic medal. He now is in the semi-final. Who knows what may happen next.

Thank you for giving us, fellow Mauritians, so much joy. And May The Force Be With You for the next fight!

18 August 2008: May The Force Be With You, Mr Bruno Julie!

Today is an historic day for our tiny country, Mauritius, as Bruno Julie, will fight in the men’s 54kg boxing quarterfinal in the Beijing 2008 Olympics at exactly 15:16. If he wins against Hector Manzanilla Rangel of Venezuela, he will be the first Mauritian ever to win an Olympic medal and he’ll be one of the few real heroes of our country.

Good luck, Mr Bruno Julie! May The Force Be With You!

    Hello!
Congratulations to Bruno Julie!!! We are very proud of him! Now the whole world knows Mauritius because of one man… BRUNO JULIE. I guess we all try our best but nobody is good and lucky as Bruno!

We have a request; if anybody has his address please put it up on the website as we would like to send him a card!

    Hi Amit and Veensha,

I don’t actually have the exact address of Bruno Julie but I know he lives in Rose-Hill. I guess that if you send him a card at Rose-Hill, the postman there will know what to do :-)

  14. Patrick Ng says

    21 August 2008 at 19:10

Yes, I’m sure everyone will know who Bruno Julie of Rose-Hill is now. Amit and Veensha, if you want to make sure it gets to the right Bruno Julie, just write: Bruno Julie (boxer). I’ve been thinking about sending a card too, and I’m sure there are many more Mauritians around the world who want to do the same.

One feel more Mauritian when one is abroad.

The judges suck! They should have deducted the points off the rival.
Bruno wins in our hearts. He’s a true hero.

Hi Ramesh (or any other knowledgeable person),

I don’t know anything about boxing. Can you please explain why the referee was bad?

  24. Ramesh says

    23 August 2008 at 09:55

Even i don’t know much about boxing. The BBC sport commentary clearly revealled that at one time the match should be 5-5 and not 6-5. And then Bruno received another one point penalty which meant that the score were then moved to 7-5, BBC said that the penalty was not fair and the point should have been allocated to Bruno.

What nice? Mauritius got a medal, how does it matters if it’s bronze.

Now i only hope that keane and Torres will make Liverpool gets the Premier League.

Thk for teaching me software engineering in my yr 2 of BSC(hons) Statistics with CS. Now i am working as a research analyst. Java was really nice.

    Hi all,
as far as i could understand, Bruno should have won the silver medal.
Zot in mardaille li, o debut match la, li suppose get 2 points but they did not give him…2ndly, at one point in time, he gained his rival’s two points and the rival should have won none, but the referee accorded the rival 1 more point. That’s really unfair!
Anyways, Bruno, We Mauritians Are Very Proud Of You.
    Cheers

    Well done Julie!

He has done what I always believed in Mauritians to be able to do. However, their lack of self confidence, inferiority complex and partly lack of hard work became barrier.

Let us not be eternal followers of others but become professionals ourselves. It is possible!

    Again what is required are:

    SELF CONFIDENCE

    HARD WORK

In competitions, we must see only an adversaries that we have to defeat, we can do it!

Best of lucks to future Mauritian athletes!

As our guest speaker was giving a talk on the convergence of broadband and broadcasting in Ebene on friday 22 August afternoon I queried when all data, voice and video services will finally converge in an IP-based Next Generation Network so that we could watch Bruno Julie on our mobile. Well done Bruno. Though I am not a big boxing fan like our Prime Minister it was one of those great moments I did not want to miss.

We are all proud of you and have a safe trip back home tomorrow.

since dad will be on standby on that day…will probably be at the airport as well :)

Same as you,im not a boxing expert but i will assume the one covering the event is knowledgeable in the field …and he clearly said (many times in fact) that some of the judges decision was unfair…

I’m happy and proud that Bruno Julie made a part of Mauritian sports history.

I’m sad to see that all attention is now focused on one person, the Olympic medalist and the efforts of the rest of the Mauritian athletes are being silently ignored. They are not insignificant athletes. They are people who managed to make it to the premier sporting event in the world: The Olympics. I with the media gave them the recognition they deserve too.

    Thanks for reading.

I am somewhat sad at the political and commercial “récupération” being done at this moment.

This is why I’ve decided not to go to the airport today. I really wanted to but Christina managed to convince me that this would be close to useless as there was absolutely no guarantee that we would see Bruno Julie given the fact that he would be in the VIP lounge (which is not really accessible to the masses…) and that he would have a limousine to take him home afterwards…

Anyway, I am very proud of his achievements. And also of the achievements of the other athletes Ajay.

Let’s hope Bruno Julie manages to keep a cool head vis-à-vis all those “new” friends…

Its really an encouragement for other sportsman in Mauririus, as we can see it is posible to win no matter who you are or where you come from.
Just the right set of mind as Bruno anyone can achieve the same in future.

    Well done Bruno
