Into The Wild

25 July 2008 By Avinash Meetoo 8 Comments

I will be succinct: Watch “Into The Wild” as it’s one of the most beautiful and breathtaking movies ever…

For those who have some time, let me tell you that Kyan, Anya, Christina and I watched Into The Wild yesterday and we were mesmerized. Here’s the plot (courtesy of IMDB):

After graduating from Emory University, top student and athlete Christopher McCandless abandons his possessions, gives his entire $24,000 savings account to charity and hitchhikes to Alaska to live in the wilderness. Along the way, Christopher encounters a series of characters that shape his life.

Nothing too fancy. No mafia killer. No special effects. No pounding music. Only a young guy who meets extraordinary (yet apparently “insignificant”) persons while hitchhiking towards Alaska.

At the end of the movie, you’ll really understand what exactly happiness means.

Thanks Sean Penn. You’re a bloody excellent film director.

Excellent movie! Superb acting by Emile Hirsch.

Apart from being a great director, Sean Pean’s acting in Clint Eastwood’s Mystic River is also phenomenal. Some scenes are so emotionally charged; you can almost feel the pain inside…

You should really read the book. Krakauer’s rendering is much more kitchen sink than Penn’s: McCandless comes across less brave and misunderstood and more impetuous and mistaken. The folly kind of gets glossed over in the movie, which, while making him a little more sympathetic, makes his a little less real.

Thanks for the tip, Maxwell. I’ll try to get the book in Mauritius or else I’ll ask someone to buy it for me…

Do you allow the children to watch naked women?

    Hi Vikram,

Interesting question. Yes, my children watched the whole of Into The Wild including that one sequence you are mentioning. It’s (of course) because it was part of the story and contributed to show how different people can be from each other.

Frankly, the most “difficult” part was the end and I can assure you that I had a lot of explaining to do afterwards…
