What do you want me to talk about?

11 January 2007 By Avinash Meetoo 28 Comments

Update: Here is the presentation I made in HTML format and in Open Document format.

I will give a short technical presentation of Mac OS X this coming Saturday 13th at the LinkByNet office in the A1 building at Vacoas as from 10:00. This presentation will take place during the Linux User Group of Mauritius monthly meeting.

Now, I can talk a lot about the Mac and Mac OS X (both from an “envangelism” and from a technical point of view) but I don’t want to be too long and, hence, boring.

I’ve, with the help of some other people, identified the following topics:

  • History of the Mac and of Mac OS X
  • Apple, Mac OS X and Open Source Software
  • An overview of Mac OS X and common applications
  • An overview of digital life and iLife
  • An overview of some interesting third-party applications
  • Technical caracteristics of Mac OS X
  • Administering Mac OS X
  • Software development on the Mac
  • etc. etc. etc.

(PS: I’ve highlighted the most probable topics I’ll touch tomorrow…)

As I’ve said, I want to do a short presentation (1 hr max) and therefore I won’t be able to cover all those topics. Help me choose the 3 most interesting topics. Of course, you can propose new topics…

Be quick! I need to finalise everything tomorrow.

Thanks.

It would be great if you could make the slides available after the presentation.

This might be under etc. etc. etc. or Administering Mac OS X, but a section on Open-Source software would be great – This is how to use fink/macports, etc etc.

True. I was thinking of that this morning. I’ll talk about Fink and Macports as well as Apple’s involvement in Open Source (the xnu kernel for instance)

    Thanks.

    Nice pic (ahem).

I think software development is important though. People know Mac OS all right but they it’s the softwares which they don’t know. It’s different to the Windows stuff, right?

can you make arrangements to get it tape and put on youtube or something :)

    Completely off-topic, but…

Are you sure that notification e-mail are being sent to comment subscribers? I did not get any for the other comments.

To be frank I don’t know. I’ve only installed it yesterday and I’ve not really had the time to test it… I’ve not tinkered with the plugin though so it is supposed to work…

It still isn’t working. I have not received any notification for your comment.

in fact, am online after 2 days! damn nomad! no connection in the north since 2 days! grrr…
anyway, by this time, i think that the presentation is over :S
    so how was it?

  10. avinash says

The presentation was well received. Mac OS X (as well as Linux) is easy to ‘evangelise’. It’s so nice :-)

I’ll put the presentation online very shortly. I’m backuping up my hard disk at this moment (true!).

    Hi Avinash

Sorry I missed the presentation, left office at 01:30 AM on Friday and woke up at 12:00 on Saturday :-(

Could talk a bit more about the Google AdSense you place on your blog? Do you get paid how much? And whcih server keeps your blog? Is it free?

  13. avinash says

    27 June 2008 at 17:23

    Hi Drake,

You’ll find all the required information on Google’s website (https://www.google.com/adsense/).

For your information, I don’t make a lot of money. As a matter of fact, I’ve not even reached $100 up to now :-)

    28 June 2008 at 12:14

Hi. Ive seen on quickonthenet.com that gaining about 1000 visitors we can have about $6990 (I don’t know how they made that calculation). And i’ve got 1072 visits on my blog. Can you tell me which FTP server(Or stuff like that) lodge your weblog nulakaz.net? And is it free?
What are the steps which i have to take to have a weblog like you with possibility to have a domain name of my own? (And if possible with no server costs at all)

  15. avinash says

    28 June 2008 at 14:00

    Hi Drake,

$6990 is a lot of money and I believe that this is a scam.

I host my blog on a virtual private server I am renting from Slicehost and I’m happy even though I have to fork $20 per month.

Previously, I was hosting my blog using Icdsoft and I was a happy customer. I moved because I wanted to have my own server. I guess Icdsoft would be ideal for someone just starting (it costs around $60 per year)

Alternatively, just create a blog on WordPress.com or Blogger. Both are free.

  16. Drake says

    28 June 2008 at 15:28

Hi. I see that your domain name finishes with /weblog/. Why is it so? You blog is lodged at http://www.weblog.com? I already have blogger. But me i want a domain name on my own. For example http://www.drake.com not .blogspot, or .wordpress.
The person just have to type http://www.drake.com in his browser and don’t matter if it puts /weblog/ at the end. But i want only the person typing http://www.drake.com.
    Your suggestions?

  17. Drake says

    28 June 2008 at 15:36

Well, when i mean your suggestions is that suggestions which does not involve any costs.
I’ve seen on blogger that we can have a domain of his own BUT we need an FTP server address and its password etc.
Is there any Free FTP server? (For me i understand the word FTP by a place where we can leave files on a server) Is FileDen.com for example an FTP?

  18. avinash says

    28 June 2008 at 18:19

In that case, you’ll need your own domain and host. Maybe you can get those for free but, as I’ve written above, I use Icdsoft for many years and I was a happy customer. The cost is around $60 per year (i.e. $5 per month) which is very reasonable…

Unfortunately, I never used a “free” hosting service so I don’t really know about them…

  19. Drake says

    28 June 2008 at 23:09

What is an FTP Server?, can you name some?

  20. Drake says

I have a lot of ripped dvds on my PC. Is there a solution to convert it in divX while i still have access to the interactive menu of the dvd, and ALL subtitles and audio streams (English & french)?

  21. avinash says

    29 June 2008 at 10:49

    No. I don’t think so.

I know that Quicktime allows for a chapter track. But I don’t know about multiple languages and interactive menus.

Why do you want to convert the DVDs? Hard disk space is cheap now.

  22. avinash says

    29 June 2008 at 10:53

As for the FTP server thing:

FTP means File Transfer Protocol and is a “language” used by computers when transferring files.

FTP can be used when uploading files to a Web server. It is also possible to do that transfer using other protocols like WebDAV or SSH (using SCP.) Consequently, it’s not mandatory to use a FTP server in order to upload files onto your Web server. For instance, I don’t have any FTP server on noulakaz.net.

  23. Drake says

    29 June 2008 at 11:09

4GB per DVD is a bit much. Compared to 1.90GB for a DivX. Even the DivX quality is in insane mode(H263, 2 pass mode, 1505Kbps, 29.970 frame rate), its quality is still lower than the MPEG 2 of the DVD. I compared the two screenshots (One for DivX and the other for the DVD), the DivX have lose contrast and saturation.

  24. Drake says

    29 June 2008 at 11:16

Let’s talk abit about AdSense now. Visit this site and tell me what you think http://www.adwords.cheap-sources.com/
I did not understand much thing about it, but you should be able to.
By the way, its 2 cents per ad word click.

    H264 Video / 720×576 / 1500 kbit/s
    AAC Audio / Stereo / 48kHz / 128 kbit/s
    2-pass encoding
    Turbo first pass
    Anamorphic: no
    Keep aspect ratio: yes
    Crop: manual
    Deinterlace: yes, slow.

These are your configs for converting your videos. Why not use anamorphic? I just went to http://www.drdivx.com yesterday and I found that many users have requested anamorphic, and dr divx implemented it in its software (The Dr. even fell in love with anamorphic!!)
Why not use anamorphic?, and what is anamorphic exactly?

  26. avinash says

    29 June 2008 at 12:05

    For (23):

Encoding something which is already encoded is not generally a good idea because you are bound to lose quality. Personally, I converted all my VCDs and DVDs to H264 not because of the size issue but because I will buy an AppleTV one of these days and the AppleTV works only with H264 correctly.

    For (24):

It’s a scam I believe. The only way to get good money from Google is to have a lot of visitors who click on the ads.

    For (25):

I’m 100% for anamorphic when converting DVDs to H264 or DivX. In my case, I was converting PAL movies (720×576) and anamorphic is only useful when the content is widescreen. For more info, check this.

I’ve never tried to run OS X on a non-Apple computer. As you mention, it’s against the EULA.

I have to say that OS X is fantastic.
