Livebox in Mauritius: zero professionalism

22 July 2006 By Avinash Meetoo 59 Comments

As I wrote in my previous post, my set-top box stopped working on the 18th (less than 24 hours after being installed). I must have called Mauritius Telecom around 8-9 times since (twice today). And, of course, no bloody technician has come to my house yet to get that thing replaced.

My Livebox (with Wi-Fi) works perfectly and that’s the only reason I’ve not launched a Bazooka rocket on Mauritius Telecom Tower yet…

So unprofessional :-(

An update

A nice lady just called me to tell me that technicians will come at 14:30 today. I’ll keep my fingers crossed…

Another update

Two technicians came and I told them that the power supply was surely dead. They replaced it and voilà… the set-top box is alive again. Here are two problems I’ve noticed:

  • The TNT channels BBC World and Doordarshan have only left audio. There is no audio in the right channel. I don’t really know if the problem is with the MBC or the set-top box.
  • I’ve noticed that the set-top box stops sending a proper colour signal after some time (i.e. the image becomes monochrome with some high-frequency artifacts). I am still investigating this matter (don’t forget that I’ve not used the set-top box a lot).

So, do Mauritius Telecom technicians do call-outs on week-ends now? If that is the case, it must be a premier in Mauritius!

    Anyway, good luck!

Ah pioneers! They are generally the first ones to get splashed with the mud of the latest technologies. ;)

The technicians are nice people and relatively knowledgeable given the amount of things that they must know (telecom + internet + audio/video etc.)

What I don’t like is when someone tells you that he/she will call you back and then never does it. This happened about 2-3 times.

But, on the whole, I like to be among the pioneers ;-)

That happens everywhere in Mauritius may it be the goverment depts too. Everyone wants to be king. In other countries, the technicians will rush towards you so that they don’t lose one valuable customer. Situation here: MT has no competitors and therefore expect some casual ‘fout-pas-malisme’.

I myself phoned Telecom Plus > 10 times last week for slow ADSL connections.

Rule: Phone them, prick them, and then you can ‘at least’ or ‘quite probably’ expect a positive response from them.

I had IPTV installed last Saturday. Two guys from MT came around to do a survey a couple of days beofre that and they noted that my PC was an old P-II 233 with Win98 & 384Mb RAM but which was fine with me as it suited my purposes and ADSL was working perfectly.

They were quick to point out that my configuration met the minimum requirements for IPTV and that I would connect to the LiveBox with the WiFi dongle that they would provide.

The MT technicians arrived at my house on Saturday morning at 09h15 and made (or tried to!) the installation. They managed to install the Set-Top box and get the TNT/ VOD working. However, they were unable to configure my PC to access the internet be it via WiFi or Ethernet! They called in another bunch of techinicans and they stayed at my place until 15h00 without any success!

The only thing that they could tell me is that: you should upgrade to XP!! I asked them whether in the meantime (I dont even think that I could install XP on such an old machine, but that is what the “technicians” think) I could revert to my internet connection using my ADSL modem and they said: YES! As I could not find the modem’s installation CD right away, I told them that I will install it myself as I had done that before.

I was not very happy when I tried to install the modem that night and it did not work! A call to Telecom Plus and the lady told me (after making wait for 5 minutes) that the technicians confirm that the modem will not work as my line has already been “converted” for IPTV by MT!!!!

At that point, I was furious! As I was without internet, I resorted to try to configure my PC to access the LiveBox and in less that 15 minutes I had my internet connection on! It is now Wednesday, and nobody has even called to enquire as to what happened to my installation!!! Very Very Bad Service!

BTW: I was told that my internet access is now capped at 2Gb p.m. and that they would install software for tracking this. I dont have any such thing – does anybody have that?

I have tried to connect my mobile (Nokia 3230) to the LiveBox: it does find the LiveBox but is unable to pair the device. The manual of the livebox says that the code is ‘0000’ but I tried that with no luck!

Will you be satisfied with the restricted download volume with MYT?
The amount in the package for 950 Rupees appear to be rediculously low! There after a charge of .50 per mkb up to 900 or so? How do you feel about this issue? Am two hearted.Want to benefit from the higher speed without being restricted on the download volume without spending over my 128k Adsl. Any solution?

Yeah Joseph, this 1Gb transfer limit is crap… 2Gb would have been so much better.

Personally I’ll monitor my downloads. I do not download illegal MP3 or warez. If ever I need to download something big (like a new Linux distribution), I’ll do it at work ;-)

    Hi peeps

A sales rep from MyT just told me that the government (not Telecom+) has plans to introduce download capping!!! I was telling him that
MyT’s(128k) 1GB/month limit was not attractive at all and he broke this news to me. Nearly choked myself hearing that. Cyber-island yeaah..

He added that the govt may well change its mind on this but it was Telecom+’s duty to advise customers of the potential change in policy… The govt may well change its mind? Telecom+’s duty? That sounded very much like he was trying to convince me to sign the contract ASAP while putting himself on the safe side… I asked him if MT/T+ had announced anything about this on their website, he said yes but I could not find anything relevant…

So, what do you guys think? Any similar experience? You think the sales rep was lying, was on drugs or is it our govt who is on drugs? [we already know that they lie :) ]

i hav adsl 128 at home and a “nice lady” called home and asked if i wanted to change my adsl to my t etc… then i told her that i was not interested because of the 1gb limit. Two days later this same lady called back and asked me if i wanted to try myT for 15days, before saying yes i first asked her if it was on a trial basis and she answered yes and gave me the possibility of going back to my 128. The next day a sales representative came home and i was surprised as i thought this was going to a technician or something like that. When i asked him if it was on a trial basis he told me no, i was surprised and he called MT and some minutes later he told me that he was sorry and that it was an unfortunate error made by those working at the call centre of MyT. So i told him that i was not interested in his myT offer, it was then that as Gerald told early he told me that governement had adopted a law on caping and this means that even my old 128 connection will soon be limited. And he even added that this will be the case for Nomad users also and he said that this will be effective as from the end of August. ANd as GErald he tried to convince me to sign the contract ASAP and used as argument to be able to benefit from this month being with no download limit on MyT . HAha i think that both those from the gov and MT are on drugs!!! but personally i have not heard about that caping through media… anyone?

    Frightening isn’t?

Limiting downloads will penalise both legitimate and illegitimate users. I feel very badly for the former (which include myself). But I really don’t care for the illegitimate users who download all day long pirated music, movies and software and make loads and loads of money by selling them.

Unfortunately, MT cannot distinguish between the two types of users…

By the way, downloads are NOT capped if the server is physically in Mauritius. I really think we should have mirrors for freely downloadable content here in Mauritius.

    Can anyone help?

I was comparing my 512 K (without myT) with hers…Suprisingly when we download the samething from a site…I got 33kb/Sec and she got 56 kb/Sec
Can I conclude that MT is using the 512 bandwidth for the MyT????

…and no need to say how many times I called MT for support…now I need to call my psy…

I would like to know if there are any grounds for suing telecom plus for all their abuse and false publicity about their ADSL products!

We are really being taken for stupid gooses. Having a breakdown on a server or an international connection failure is understandable. But paying Rs 750 for a 128K connection and only getting ( as now 379 BYTES !) and in best cases 12K is unacceptable.

TELECOM PLUS AND FRANCE TELECOM should be careful and respect their engagements towards us customers.

Patience has its limits..specially when you are paying for it!

Anger and frustration can lead to insane acts…the tall tower might just crash one day..maybe soon!!

About that left-audio problem, I think it’s MBC or MCML, cause I got that for a while with MBC 1 with the ordinary TV set top boxes. But I never used the MyT set top for long… it’s just not good enough for VOD – not enough good movies… The speed ah… what to say, it’s good only after midnight and slower than dial up during the day…. whatever… The other options are either not available (Nomad) or too expensive (Emtel, MTML..), so I’m going to stick to MyT for a year at least.

I’ve been reading a couple of threads about the Mauritius ADSL connection speed being terribly slow lately and I couldn’t agree more.

Beginning this month, I’ve been experiencing extremely slow connection starting from 9am to 6pm. I’ve been experiencing extremely slow connection during 9am to 6pm. I’m on an ADSL 512 plan which should more or less guarantee a speed of 50-52KBps, however during the above mentioned hours, the speed is intermittent and drops to as low as 7-10KBps which is unacceptable.

I have to resort to using dial-up at times which is faster during this timeframe. If Mauritius Telecom can’t guarantee a 512kpbs speed, why do you advertise for it? This is misleading and against advertising acts.

I’ve been told one false tale after another regarding the status of my complaint. I have called MT customer service repeatedly over the last several days just trying to get a honest account of what is really happening and what to expect. I feel that I can’t trust anything that is told me anymore. I am tired of calling and being told that everything is fine with my line and nothing can be done.

Their usual mantra is that they don’t guarantee speed for international website. Wake up! Who the hell uses Servihoo (uhh, using it right now just to vent myself!). Internet is meant to be global, and not restricted to MU websites afterall. It looks like that they’re pushing up a lot of SME and SOHO to signup for ADSL and they can’t keep up with the bandwidth demand.

I’m going to soon go to the press and will have interesting stories to tell afterwards.

Im on Myt since maybe 6 months now. When they phoned to tell me to switch to Myt months back, the technician told me that past 1 GB, I would be getting around 200k.

Just ot confirm, I phoned the hotline and here again, they told me that past 1 GB, my line would fall back to my old adsl line of 128k which was more that plausible.

However, from my experience, past 1 GB or not, most of the time, I get INCREDIBLE rates of 4-8KB/s.

I think I’ll phone them and ask them to cancel my subscription, event if Im supposed to stay with the another 6 months! I think we should alll turn on on them, it’s whats called fake publicity + @ the price they make us pay for their adsl, its theft!

I wished we could group into an association and sue them dammit! But unfortunately, it’s a fight we cannot win :@ Frustrating…

today MyT customer care phoned me after having mailed them about the slow download speed, comparable to dial up 2 days before(??!!). they told me it was because of the 1 GB cap. I had to agree with them as i perfectly knew that i downloaded well beyond this.

i guess i’ll be shifting to wanadoo 512 kbps. i cannot live without downloading at high speeds…duh

i’ll have to cancel my MyT subscription. I guess ppl who can afford it should do it as customers took MyT just because of the 256Kbps connection. The VoD is crap. You get DVDs half the price at your local videoclub….duh… and you can as well burn thm and have a copy for yourself easily. And the TNT decoder is not that expensive and you get the radio channels as well.

As far as i’m concerned, i found only the 256 ADSL useful.

So guys, if you can afford shifting to wanadoo, then do i. This may then teach MT a lesson. lol

though i also agree that MyT was not designed for heavy downloads. but still….

the livebox is apparently is very advance piece of technology. Very soon orange will allow its customers to connect a webcam to the livebox so that any one check on their home from anywhere in the world. Orange allows free call to other orange users. When I am refering to orange I mean MyT as well as it they are the mauritian partner. I am just wondering whether calling from the UK to Mauritius via the livebox(that is connecting a phone line over the 2nd port on the box) would be possible??? any ideas
I can’t wait for MT’s monopoly over the safe cable to end. This would benefit so many foreigners to make cheap calls to mauritius.

I subscribed to My-T on 6th March 08, a week later I received 2 calls from 8585 telling me that they would call me for the installation.

On the 27th March, having not heard from My-T, I decided to give them a call. I was horrified to hear that “due to technical problems, they would only be able to install the service at the end of April.”

Technical Problem !!?? Does anyone have any idea what problem they are talking about or are they just buying time.

I would have been reassured if they told me something like “upgrading our service” or at least “due to the numbers of subscriptions bla bla” but “technical problems”

    nice marketing technique you **&^$@#@.

Anyways, I’ve looked up Emtel for my Internet Service. It looks pretty good. Only drawback is that you have to buy the modem (Rs 7000)

If MT still comes up with stupidities like “technical problems”. I’m going for Emtel.

    I am subscribed to Orange 512K plan…

Since 3 weeks , I am having disconnection problem with my adsl..

    Week 1.
Called Orange support on 8900, a guy “A” picked up..enquired bout my problem..
His solution :switch off your router for 15 minutes and on again.

Did that and that did not resolve my problem.

Called them again.. Now i have another guy “B “on the line.. have to tell him my problem again… he tells me , to connect the router directly to the socket, that is bypass the adsl splitter and to monitor the internet..

Again, same problem.. internet disconnects eratically.. sometimes after 5 minutes, 10 minutes..

I call them again… I get a lady on the line.. P.s i prefer the ladies than the guys.. they are more helpful than the guys..

I tell her the steps that they told me to do but problem is not resolved.. She tells me that she gonna do some test on my phone line.. Asks me to connect the phone directly to the socket..She even give me her name to call her back after 5 minutes..

I call her back after 5 minutes.. and her verdict “there’s indeed a problem in my phone line, and she’s filing a complaint so that a technician can look at me”

I felt relieved, coz at first i thought my modem was a fault

2 days later, a technician drops home.. am not home.. but dad is home.. he checks connection at socket and he’s done..

When I get back home.. my adsl connection is still up n down..up n down..

    pffff…

    Week 2

I call Orange Support again.. tells them that my problem isn’t solved.. The guy tells me the following “surement ena perdition lor ou la ligne, nou pu fer ene technicien vine guete sa”

Again, 2 days later, technician comes home.. my dad’s home and he doesn’t know much bout these technology stuff..
he uses his meter to check line..but he doesn;t find any problem.. he only sees my filter connector loose in the socket.. and gives me a new filter.. and he goes away..

He didn’t even wait to see if the connection is lost…

Now and again, i have constant disconnection from the internet..

I was so happy bout Telecom services before.. but now they really sucks

here is my line stats (downstream/upstream)
    Type G992_3_A
    Modem Status Showtime

    Data Rate(Kbps) 512/126
    Noise Margin 0.3/40.5
    Output power 0.2/0.2

    Attenuation 9.6 /3.4

the downstream noise margin of 0.3 .. do u think its ok?

i believe there’s a problem in the cable, may be from the pole outside my house to my socket…

    To all LOSERS!!

Technicians of Mauritius Telcom don’t take app with client. You deal with call center first then  they send mail to section concerned. It take some time… When technicians have your reguest. they came on the same day!!!

Are you implying that it’s ok for call center personnel to not really know
what they are supposed to know?

Hi Avinash I have a question I want to know if the MYT set top box can be connected to a pc-i mean to say if I’m using it then can I watch mbc-if I need additional hardware can u advise me

Hi Arvind. The MyT set top box outputs in HDMI. If you want to watch it on your computer screen (it’s a desktop with a separate screen, isn’t it?) then you’ll need one with an HDMI connector. Alternatively, you can also split the HDMI signal into DVI (for video) and analog / digital for audio. But, as far as I know, these additional hardware are not easy to find in Mauritius.

Another solution is to use the analog outputs on the MyT set top box and, in that case, you’ll need some kind of monitor with these inputs (somewhat rare…) or an analog video acquisition card (or a graphics card with video inputs).

Have fun finding a solution :-)
