I’ve just learnt that the 1Gb transfer limit for MyT has been waived. Instead, there is a new Garantie d’Usage which basically states:

Vous avez la priorité lorsque vous êtes dans votre “garantie d’usage”. Si vous dépassez votre “garantie d’usage”, vous pourrez continuer à surfer, lire vos mails, mais avec un niveau de priorité moindre, pour preserver la qualité de service pour tous. Vous ne paierez rien de plus. Avec My.T, vous profitez du haut débit pleinement, sans soucis.

What I read from what is:

  • Up to 1Gb of transfer per month, Mauritius Telecom will do its best (i.e. best-effort) to give us the bandwidth we’re paying for (i.e. 256 kbit/s in my case)
  • If the transfer limit has been exceeded in the month, then Internet will become very slow (I wonder if they are using some kind of traffic shaping) but will still remain free.

Personally, that’s ok for me :-)

  1. Eddy Young says:

Check out http://myfrag.net. Users are reporting 2 mbps download speed. What is not clear is whether they are seeing this when downloading torrents from local peers or whether this happens with international downloads as well.

  2. vicks says:

un niveau de priorité moindre. :(

i download an average of 3.0 gb in 24 hours, i don’t think its ideal for me.

However MT recently tried to improve its services, offering packages like MyT,
But i wonder if its not a kind of strategy just to get lots of people to sign in a 1 year contract before MTML start providing its services!

  3. Fred says:

    The question is… how slow?
Do you think it will revert to the old 128 kbps afer exceeding the limit, or slower still?

  4. Yashvin says:

it may become a bit slow, but let me tell u…
it cant become more slower than Nomad :S

it simply makes u mad…thats what their moto should be!

  5. LaSh says:

Yup, they’ve removed the ‘capping’ because they found and that most people who already were on ADSL were reluctant to move onto MyT because of the 1GB limit free transfer, which is quite understandable, imo.

I’m moving to MyT also now that the ‘capping’ is off :D I applied on Sunday, and am getting it tomorrow, which I think is quite a RAPID response coming from Mauritius Telecom.

Btw, I talked to the marketing guy who came over to my place for the initial talking, I asked him about this ‘garantie d’usage’ thingy.
It mostly applies to those who have switched from ADSL 128 to MyT 256
After using 1GB of data transfer, those having MyT 256 will move back to their initial 128 kb/s speed - no SO slow :P, whereas those moving from ADSL 512 to MyT 512, there won’t be any such thing, it’s gonna be 512 kbps all the way - and that’s for ME :D.

  6. avinash says:

    To Eddy:

I confirm. I can download at around 800kbit/s from non-Mauritian websites since about 1 week. I’ve kept quiet because I thought it was a misconfiguration from MT for my connection :-)

    To Fred:

    I’ll tell you around 25 October when I exceed my 1Gb limit…

    To Yashvin:

Many of my students are complaining about Nomad. Is it THAT crap?

  7. avinash says:

Can Asvin (or anyone else from MT) confirm that the “slow speed” will be the (perfectly respectable) 128Kbit/s?

  8. Splash says:

The 1 GB limit has been waived since 3-4 weeks now

as mentioned by lash many were reluctant to change!!!
after the limit waived MT call the normal adsl customers everyday for the move to MyT package!!!

The only problem is the 1 year contract term!
Will another ISP wont provide a better package in the meanwhile :D

    About NOMAD thingy
    just lol
many current users r discouraging their friends to even try it!!!

    @ Yashvin :-

Y dont u relate ur stories online?
Like “How to use NOMAD in rainy[cloudy] days” :D

Still waiting NOMAD to cover the whole island since some years already!!

    @ Avinash :-
Avec My.T, vous profitez du haut débit pleinement, sans soucis.

    This is not completely true!!!
Their techician are not ‘that qualified’!!!

A friend of mine was having connection problem with her LIVEBOX…

U know wat MT Tech said???
“Dont use firefox; use IE instead!!! to connect..” WHAT A JOKE!!!

If the pc de pc doesnt detect the LIVEBOX!!! do u use IE to solve it??? lol

The only thing the tech came to do was to “PING” the ip / change LIVEBOX and thats all
Since he cudnt get a solution he gave up!!!

COMPUTER SCIENTIST need to help MT TECHNICIAN!!! lol

  9. Asvin Balloo says:

Unfortunately Avinash, i’am also like you, I don’t know if the slow speed is 128Kbit/s ;-(

  10. avinash says:

Ok. We´ll find out at the end of the month what’s MT definition of slow speed :-)

  11. Yashvin says:

    sorry for a late reply…

    crap ??? more than that…
except the price, nothing is good…

ya, as splash says, during rainy cloudy days, thats worst…
well thats some months before n for now i cant say anything since it has not been raining in the north since long!

ya think that i will go and add more comments to my post itself concerning special precautions i took when using nomad!

    see it there on http://yashvin.rikonplus.com/blog/

    btw, just a summary…
put the nomad in a plastic bag n let it hand outside the window!
    haha! seems mad? thats nomad!

  12. Eddy Young says:

Avinash: Many of the complaints about Nomad are unjustified if you ask me. For one, very few people ever call technical support to receive a free assessment of their connection. I did so when I subscribed to Nomad on behalf of a relative, and the technician was quick to sort out the problems. Secondly, anyone will be disillusioned if they expect a huge difference in speed when moving from dial-up to 128 kbps. The difference is minimal. Lastly, I think some have taken chances and subscribed to Nomad despite knowing that their areas are not covered by the network.

My wife uses Skype to talk to a relative everyday, and they experience very few problems. Once the connection was very bad, but it turned out that Nomad were upgrading the network (which they followed promptly by a phone call). I personally find it amazing that we can do video calls to Mauritius on such a narrow bandwidth. Having said that, I know another Nomad subscriber who experiences many problems with his connection.

  13. Sundeep says:

    Nomad Nomad..
well, i must say, nomad is a good solution for guys who use the net for browsing, adsl (and now MyT) is too expensive..
Nomad offers low price for 24hrs connetivity, for some1 who like me had a 50hrs package with MT and on top of that with my excess, that was costly..
now with nomad 64, i have a somewhat faster bandwidth (compared to dial up), and am only for 24hrs(of course, there are some time when there are small complications) bt for the price you are paying, and the uptime of the service, i think nomad is not bad at all.
i have been on nomad for 10 months now, and following promotional prices due to uom network society membership, i will now take the 128kbps, and i will still b paying less than the current 64 connetion,
well i will tell u more abt the 128, right now, have to attend the lecture with mr avinash

  14. Fred says:

I have just been on the phone with one of the My.T telephone-support people. Although she didn’t seem quite knowledgeable, she kindly answered all my questions.
I can understand that after the 1 GB limit, MT does not guarantee a fluid 256 kbit/s connection; but she refused to acknowledge that there WILL be a drop in the connection speed and if ever there is, and by how much it’ll be.
I was meaning to ask those who have tried the Video on Demand service, does it or does it not consume the available bandwith and can one surf the net simultaneously?

  15. avinash says:

As far as I know, Fred, the VOD service does not prevent you from surfing at maximum speed (i.e. it has its dedicated bandwidth) at the same time.

  16. BlueSteel says:

I think that MyT is in favour af everyone coz u r paying 950+vat for a connection speed of 256 kbit/s whereas wiz the original wanadoo it would be for a 128 kbit/s.

As a hotliner on ADSL at O Telecom, i deduce zat its great. If u look at your LiveBox setup, u will see that u r receiving 5120 kbit/s and zat when u exceed your “garantie d’usage” ur connection speed return to its original state

pa grave! coz u r paying only 950+vat

However i found the technicien n the hotliners there as “Amateur”
which is totally false coz when the line is converted to DSL, the frequency is much higher n its far to mix up wiz a station signal.

  17. avinash says:

Personally, I also think my MyT is “good enough”

BTW, I don’t understand your last sentence BlueSteel (why use nicknames? Don’t you like your real name?)

    :-)

  18. Christopher says:

Its me! Blusteel. U c am using my name now.:-)

    .
I was saying that the technicians n hotliners were “Amateur” coz they don’t give concrete explanations of ur connection failures.
The only thing that could resolve a prob for them is to reset the livebox

  19. Natasha says:

    Mauritius Telecom SUCKS!!!
ADSL is extremely expensive in Mauritius. Mauritius Telecom have the monopoly on SAFE cable. MT is making millions of profit each year and he is not willing to reduce the price of ADSL!
    England ADSL 8Mb/s is 10Pound (Rs600)
    France ADSL 20Mb/s is 9.90Euro (RS400)
    India ADSL 2Mb/s is Rs700
    Ireland ADSL 8Mb/s is 20Euro (Rs800)
    Mauritius ADSL 1Mb/s is Rs6400 +vat
Please dont call our country ‘Cyber Island’ People wil laugh at us.

  20. avinash says:

    True.

ADSL is extremely expensive in Mauritius. In my opinion, a good way to decrease this price is to have more local servers and mirrors. But this depends a good deal on MT’s policy.

  21. Reaz says:

In November 2005 and in budget 2006/2007, the government of Mauritius had reduced the price of SAFE by 20% and 25% respectively. It means that Adsl in Mauritius must have reduced by at least 45%. But up to now, the price is not reduced. Mauritius Telecom has broken record on profit this year.
By now Adsl 128kb must have been below Rs400. Who will finally brake the monopoly of MT?
That is why Im using Nomad. I found Nomad good but at time I do get broken connection. But I manage with my Nomad as the price is good.
Lets hope that MTML comes with good package of Adsl.

  22. sailendrah says:

    Hi friends,
Never take My.T Package from Mauritius Telecom.
I have used my 1gb limit in 2 days. After that the connection is extremely slow. So slow that I cant open my web page! My livebox is not working from 5 days. I dont know if it is because that I have exceeded my 1gb. Up to now no technician from MT have come.
Yesterday, I have meet a relative working for MT. He had follow causes on ADSL TV in France. He told me that My.T will never work in Mauritius as the Safe cable is too weak! The flow of Broadband is too much saturated. That is why MT is buying Eassy cable.
It is useless to burn your money on My.T

  23. Christopher says:

I agree wiz wat ur saying, but see it in a diff angle. What do u prefer (ADSL or RTC).Even if u take Nomad, it will still pass through the SAFE.I’ve exceeded my 1gb but the connection is still goog.I’m downloading up to 31kbp/s and sometime i exceed th 69kbps/s

Technicians there are not so professionals. I think they are not so experienced on MyT`s Livebox (requirements & configurations)

Concerning the Safe Cable, i`ve made a test once and i deduced that the connection is a bit slower coz the time for the ping to reach the IP address 217.146.186.51 was 200ms more than it has to be for a perfect speed connection

However, sailendrah, during these past days there was a pb on safe cable coz 45Mb of it were damaged. Even at La Reunion they got slower connections or not at all.Thats why u were unable to open a web page.

  24. vincent says:

hi!I’m a Myt user(256kb)for one week now and if i’m right i already reached my 1Gb limit. However i’m experiencing a very annoying problem since last monday,my international download speed has dropped a lot, mostly during the day,but at night around midnight then it’s ok it downloads around 30kbp/s.With my previous 128kbps/s adsl i never got this kind of problem,id did dropped during the day but not that much. Now with the Myt the download rate during the day is a ridiculous 4-7kbp/s,that’s unbelievable!!!

I’ve made a report on the 8585 and they asked me to make a test by dowloading anything form a local website. When i do this, everything’s fine and the speed is over 180kbp/s and even more but my only problem comes when downloading from international websites during the day, even using download managers sucks(sorry for the word)but that’s how it can be explained.

They said they will send a technician to see the problem but i highly doubt that they will find a solution for that, what i think is that they know only how to install the livebox and other hardwares which come with it plus some simple basic configurations, that’s all!

So i want to ask you guy/s if there’s a special way of configurating the livebox????Any suggestion will be fine.

    Vincent.

  25. avinash says:

I was downloading at 10Kb/s only.

I called them. They told me to switch off everything and wait for 15 minutes.

After this, my download speed was increased to 20-21 Kb/s which is acceptable for a 256Kbit/s connection…

  26. vincent says:

Yeah, but is it not annoying that everytime that your download speed drops you need to turn off your pc for even 15 minutes then turn it on again to get back that reasonable speed? Is there no other way, like changing the configuration of the livebox or may be re-adjusting some settings at the telecom(headquarters)there?I think you can’t keep turning your pc off and on like that.Did they send some technician(if there’s any who’s really qualified for that)to your place to see the problem closer?

With the problem that i’m facing i’m near turning into a bat because the only time i can get reasonable speed is after midnight, then i can seize the opportunity to download my files.Otherwise, like now it’s downloading at 8.5kbp/s and it’s killing me.

  27. sailendrah says:

Im very disappointed with the service of MyT.

    Im going to cancel it!

I strongly advice you, my friends, NOT TO TAKE THE MyT.

  28. Dev says:

    Hello guys!

Had the livebox installed last sunday, and upto now, its working fine and im managing to download at a speed of around 30KB/s which is more than acceptable for a 256kbps line (32KB/s max).

However, like Vincent pointed out, i get extremely slow download speeds during daytime - around 10KB/s. I have been experiencing similar problems with my adsl 128kbps line during the past weeks too. According to me, it has to do with MT’s “garantie d’usage”.

The hotliners told me that past 1 GB, my download rate would oscillate between 128 and 256kbps. However, what is think is that ADSL users, and i mean all ADSL users, are probably given lower priority during daytime (irrespective if they got past their download limit or not), so as not to sip out all the bandwidth, thus allowing non-DSL users, to surf at a reasonable speed.

At night, when the bandwidth is less sollicited, due to a decreased number of users, we get a higher priority which accounts for a higher download rate. Well, thats my theory. I have already reached and got well above 1 GB of downloads and if this stuff about garantie d’usage only works during daytime, im fine with it. Atleast, its better than having a constant but “slow” download rate of 13KB/s.

Now, on a different note, i would like to know if any of you guys been downloading on the torrent network. Personally, i get a NAT error and i suspect the livebox to be the cause. I disabled the integrated firewall and opened all my ports, but nada! If anyone could help out, i’d really appreciate.

My regards to Avinash, ur blog is really great man :D

  29. Fred says:

I just got hold of My.T. The connection is slow though, and Gmail doesn’t want to work. According to the technician, its due to the repairs being carried out by TELECOM PLUS on the network.

When the technician was setting up the Livebox, I briefly noticed a connection property in the admin page, it’s “Attenuation Rate”. I also overheard him telling some colleague about it being 44 at my place. Does anyone know about this attenuation rate and how good/bad 44 is?

Oh… does anyone know the admin password for the Livebox setup? ;)

  30. Fred says:

Sometimes you just forget about simplicity, the password is “admin”! ;)

  31. vincent says:

One question to all Myt users, does your livebox heat up like hell???Because mine does and i’m a bit worried about that and i want to know if it’s only me who’s getting this or is it normal?

And another thing, when you turn off your pc,do you let your livebox on or turn it off too?(except when you’re using the decoder which needs the livebox to remain on)

By the way,i would like to thank Avinash about his great blog, which we are all using to discuss about that Myt thing. We’re all thankful to you Man!Keep up the good work!!!

    Vincent.

  32. avinash says:

Mine also heats up a lot!

Thanks for your appreciation for my blog :-)

  33. Christopher says:

ADSL means (Asymetric) digital subscriber line which also means that you will never get a same and constant speed rate each time you connect to the Net. As a hotliner (my work is based on internet/ADSL) at OMT (a futur competitor of Mauritius Telecom), i’ll will reply all your questions on the slow speed rate at daytime. (Your’r right Dev coz as there are many non-DSL user that are paying there internet consumption, MT will give them priority during day time in order to get the maximum profits on there heads. They know that ADSL users here are paying a fixed amount for unlimited internet connections which means that it will not provide them additional profit.)

However, the only way to get a same, stable connection speed is to have a SDSL connection.( which unfortunately i think is not applicable here in Mauritius-Maybe afterwards)

To fred now: Attenuations mease the weakness of your phone line.
I think that your attenuation is too high coz the limit is up to 45 here. This can result in lost of connection some time. You should tell them to clean up your DSL line.1 tips( unplug your phone and look at your attenuation)

By the way, as my friends said, this website is great Avinash coz we can help each oher through it.Thanks for it

    Christopher

  34. Christopher says:

Good news my friend! I think MT has abolished the 1Gb of “garantie d’usage” for now.:-)

One of the hotliner there told me that we are no more restricted on 1Gb of full connection speed.

I hope that they were right.

  35. killer04 says:

Really? I haven’t heard anything about that yet :S . Speed is still slow as usual.

  36. Fred says:

Thanks Christopher, I will phone the customer service and ask them to look into that.

Can anyone second the info posted by Christopher about the “garantie d’usage”? The variation of my connection speed is somewhat erratic these days.

My Livebox doesn’t heat up that much, but I have a different problem. My set-top box has twice lost the feed from the Livebox. Has anyone else experienced this?

  37. Rama says:

help with Livebox - P2P Problem

do you guys having problem of connecting with software like emule, azureus, kaaza etc..

it starts downloading for sometime(20min-max)then it stops..

im having a low ID on emule, that is “No IP is known of the machine eMule is running on therefore all requests like queue or connection requests to this client have to be routed over the server, the low ID client is connected to.”

ive added tcp & udp ports on the livebox, but still doesnt change anything…
ive try disabling the firewall on livebox still doesn’t work…
ive configured the port on windows firewall on on McAfee also…

when i try to test the port i got the following error:

[[[[Please wait while the ports of your eMule are being tested...
    Testing IP: ADSL-133-62.myt.mu (41.212.13x.xx)
    Starting TCP connection test...
TCP test failed! UDP test will not be performed]]]]

    i believe its a problem of NAT…

ive been phoning the hotliner but they dont seem to know where’s the problem….anyone knows how to change the NAT or know how to solve that!!!!!!

    thx

  38. avinash says:

You don’t expect me to tell you how to indulge into piracy, is it?

From the Computer Misuse and Cybercrime Act of 2003, I quote:

Any person who, knowingly discloses any password, access code, or any other means of gaining access to any program or data held in any computer system -

    (1) for any wrongful gain;
    (2) for any unlawful purpose; or
    (3) knowing that it is likely to cause prejudice to any person,

shall commit an offence and shall, on conviction, be liable to a fine not exceeding 50,000 rupees and to a term of imprisonment not exceeding 5 years.

I don’t have Rs. 50,000 handy. I really don’t have the time to spend 5 years in prison because of you. I have two kids. And I still have a lot of research and teaching to do…

I’m slightly ironic here but I really despise using P2P networks to steal proprietary software. Use Opensource software instead. They are as good and they are free :-)

  39. Rama says:

    hi,
i was not talking about softwares or …piracy,…my problem is that the livebox of MY.T has not been configured properly and they are not being able to reslove the problem. they telling me to try all sort of stuffs..but in vain.

  40. killer04 says:

Thats weird cause now since emule seems the programs which downloads the fastest on my pc. I can get 20-30 kb/s with it. If your ports on the livebox is open and emule still gives a low id, you have to keep on restarting the livebox and it will eventually work.

  41. Navin says:

Please, i need help. I would like to know how to open all ports on the Livebox. Plz help

  42. armand says:

i would like to know after the “garantie d’usage” has used up what will the speed??

  43. Rama says:

20-30kb/s!!!r u using myt wanadoo??ive try resetting the livebox several times, still not working.have u added any ports on livebox??

  44. Thierry says:

Your ADSL speed depends on your location & the your tel line quality.
It is effective only within 3km. Outside that range your speed
    won’t be that great. I’m getting 50-60KB/S on 512kbps.

  45. killer04 says:

You mean you get 512kbps after the garantie dusage has been used up? Thats weird cause after mine is used up i only get 128 kbps or even less and i have a 512 kbps connection. I phoned them a couple of times but they did not do anything to solve that problem

  46. killer04 says:

BTW to Rama, I noticed when my IP starts with 41.XXX its very hard to download from P2P programs but the web seems faster. So i have to keep on reseting the livebox till my ip becomes 196.XXX. When my ip starts with 196 then i can get high id from Emule and sometimes my download can even reach 40 kb/s on emule. And i opened the ports necessary for emule to work on emule.

  47. armand says:

how did you open the ports explain to us

  48. vincent says:

    Hey killer04!

i’m having exactly the same problem as you and i just called the 8585 about that to see if there’s any way of configurating the livebox so that i don’t get the ip starting with 41,but they told me it’s not possible.

When the ip changes to 41,impossible to use P2P program, utorrent more precisely, but only with ip starting with 196 then i get get decent download rates. The thing that makes me mad is that what if about i let my pc on at night to download something using the ip 196 and in the middle of the night at an unexpected time it changes itself to ip 41,then it would be a complete waste of time,my pc would be turn on for nothing as the download would stop!I just turned on my pc two hours earlier, got the ip 41 but i disconnected and reconnected to get the ip 196 but after only one and a half hour of connection with the ip 196,it changes by itself to ip 41 and my download rate just dropped to ZERO!!!

What do you think about that?Is it not disturbing to get that ip 41.XXX.XXX.XX ?????What can be done abou that?

BTW,my port is opened too for utorrent.

  49. killer04 says:

Yeah i agree that it is very annoying that the IP changes automatically like that. Unfortunately i haven’t found a solution to this problem yet. It seems like something completely random, but if i find a way to connect on 196.XXX i will let you guys know.

To Armand to open the ports for a specific program, go to the livebox configuration. Type “admin” both for username and password. On top you will see Serveurs Lan. Click on it. Type ajouter. Then you will have to add the details in the box. If your p2p like emule uses both tcp and udp, you will have to type ajouter once and add the tcp details. For “Du port” and “Au port” add the same port for example mine is 34592. Then click on apliquer. Then repeat the process for the UDP ports. In the box select UDP then enter the UDP port.

BTW the technicians for Mauritius telecom came to my place because i was having some problems with the wifi connection and they told me that the internet has been slow for international downloads as they were having problems with their server. They also said that they removed the I GB garantie d’usage so now we can use the internet to download how much we want to.

Do you guys know if there are any local stuff where i can download interesting stuff? I want to test the 2mb national download speed a bit.

  50. vincent says:

    Haha!

If only there couuld be interesting things to download from our local servers,it would be fantastic. But unfortunately i haven’t found anything interesting to download yet, almost all interesting stuffs are from international servers.Sometimes i feel that the 2mb they give for local surfing and downloads is a waste because we can’t really use it as it should be,it’s so limited!

Yeah, before when i called 8585(i used to call there a lot)to report a dramatic drop in speed for international surfing and download, they told me that there’s been several reports from my-t users about the same matter and there’s in fact a little problem from their servers(for international)and that the engineers and technicians are making the follow-up aboout that.Hope and wish that they will be qualified enough to be able to fix the problem.

Hey killer04,do you use windows firewall or do you use another firewall?Because i’ve heard that windows firewall doesn’t like P2P programs.I’m using Zone Alarm but it’s using quite a lot of resources. But since i’ve been using ZA my download speed has improved compared to when i used windows firewall.Let me know about that.If only there could be a way to configure the livebox to reject ip address starting with 41.XXX that would make things easier.I just went out for about 4-5 hours and when i came back,i’ve noticed that the ip has already been changed to that stupid 41.XXXX.And had to reset my livebox to get back that decent ip 196.XXX.It’s driving me crazy like hell!!!!

  51. armand says:

There is no need to use a firewall and the livebox have a hardware firewall

  52. killer04 says:

Unfortunately for the moment the 2mb download speed is not really necessary. The only interesting thing that i found on local servers is an anime called bleach and its provided by nomadlive. Too bad the speed is slow as hell. They said that we were supposed to get great download speeds as the files are hosted on a local server.

For now that only firewall i use is the one integrated in the modem. I tested it on a site which checks the strength of you firewall and it was found out to be very safe. Before i used Zone alarm and sygate and they were very good. I am not sure but i think that my sygate was using less resources than ZA. I dont use the windows firewall as it has a very low rating. But if you want to, you can open its ports by going to control panel —> Security Center —> Manage Security Settings for windows firewall —> exceptions then add ports. This will help you download speeds.

  53. armand says:

Nomad server is very slow test it on telecom server

  54. Christopher says:

Myt will never work here (i hope that i’m wrong)! For now they’r having slow problems wiz theirs servers (they are not so qualified to), they have got the stupid idea to alloud full speed rate to new users in the expense of those who subscribed at first time. (That’s why somme are getting slower connections and some are getting EXTRA speed) It also explaine why they have banished the 1gb garantie d’usage.

I’ve made a test mire once wiz 9telecom and see the result:

    Votre Bande
    Passante 76.282 Kbps (9.535 Ko/sec)

I told them that i’m not sure it was ADSL and they asked me to make some test on ncb.intnet.mu where i’ve a download rate of 200kbps/s. (if only there was somthing interesting on this web site) In fact, it’s the only site in mauritius where you can exceed the 200kbps/s that’s why they make test on it.

I’ll keep calme for this month and after that they’ll really know who i am coz i’m very VERY angry wiz them

I’LD LIKE TO KNOW WAT WILL BE THE NEXT THREAD WIZ MYT

  55. killer04 says:

Mauritius Telecom are thieves. They just want to steal our money while giving us really poor services. They should think about their customers first before their wallet. If they find that their servers will not be able to give full rate transfers as there are too many people, they should stop allowing people to subscribe to the adsl services for a while until they get a better server instead of making other adsl users suffer. I wonder if there is going to be a good isp in Mauritius one day or if we will always lag behind.

  56. vincentlimpacchong@yahoo.com says:

Well said killer04!It seems that MT cares more about money than providing at a decent service to its customers, mostly to earlier customers. It’s like they are still selling air-tickets for a flight which has already been filled up to the max!

And christopher, you’re right about that ncb.intnet.mu download testing, they asked me to make that test too when i complained so many times about very slow surfing and downloading on international websites, like i said the 2MB they’re giving us is like trying to buy us,but we’re no fools!!!We all know that there’s nothing intersting to download on local servers. What the hell do they think we’re gonna do with some downloads from the natinal computer board???

  57. Nazim says:

That true my friend, Mauritius Telecom is only concern about money. Im just fed up with with my MyT. It goes crazy special when the 1GB is limit is over. If MT continue like that it will end like France Telecom in France.
I wonder what ICTA is doing in Mauritius. Is ICTA here to protect customer or protect MT? I think that ICTA never read newspaper or check blog to find problems of customer. They are just sitting in aircon office and have big big income at the end of each month.
When the price of adsl will finally be reduce?

  58. killer04 says:

I think that if a lot of people complain about the service, they will be forced to drop the prices. Anyway to anyone who had adsl 512k before upgrading to my.t what speed do you have now? When i first upgraded i could get adsl 1024/512 but now my download speed is about 470k whereas my upload is 512k.

  59. Moxica says:

Orange UK have a wireless broadband package at £19.99 per month that offers up to 8MB download speeds with unlimited use. It includes free international calls at any time to 100 different countries, plus calls to UK landlines. Their Livebox technology allows up to six computers to connect wirelessly to the service.

  61. Jean Pierre says:

Mauritius Telecom is sucking the blood of Mauritian!!!!!!
Its a shame to call our country Cyber Island as the rate of adsl is too high. I had taken adsl 512kb from MT and pay them big money every month just to have weak download rate???
I have made several complaint to MT but in vain. I final have to disconnect my adsl. I think that everyone in Mauritius is fed up with Mauritius Telecom.

  62. killer04 says:

Yeah you are absolutely right. MT does not care about the customers. They only want to make money. Too bad there is no serious competitor for mauritius telecom. The other two offer the same price for the service.

  63. armand says:

ICTA has revised ADSL to Rs 790 but Nomad did not accept it as it is offering 128kps at Rs890

Its not MT has to be blamed, It has invested in SAFE. If the speed has gone down but be patient it will return back to normal soon. I used a 512kps at my office and its fast like lighting.

Not like Nomad 1 year contract = 1 Year troubles

  64. Stéphane Lee says:

    512kbps fast as light?
The latency must be killing you.

  65. vincent says:

Hey,Armand, what do you mean by ICTA has revised ADSL to RS790?Is is a recent change? And what about the price for My-t(256kbps),is it still Rs950+VAT or has it been reduced too?

    Thanks for confirming about that.

    Vincent.

  66. killer04 says:

I dont think that adsl 512k is fast as lightning. Mauritius Telecom is doing a really poor job. I am supposed to get 1mb but i rarely get it. Most of the time its 512k. The upload is fine though. I can up at 512k.

  67. Gavin says:

  71. killer04 says:

Are you mad? ADSL the best in Mauritius??? In other countries you can get adsl 20 MB cheaper than you can get ADSL 512k in mauritius!!! Mauritius is really backwards with outdated technology!

    FYI, this is lightning fast.

  76. Stephen Naicken says:

I have a 10Mbps ADSL 2+ connection at my home in the UK. Yes, I can download lots of data very quickly, but I would quite happily trade it for 512kbps and daily access to the beaches in Mauritius!

Some of the comments are a little puzzling. MT’s primary responsibility is to its shareholders and all they want is a healthy profit. So why complain if MT is only interested in money and not in launching new internet services such as ADSL2+?

Mauritius will always play catchup to the developed nations in this particular area. The demand for ADSL is nowhere near on the same scale as that in the West, so it seems daft to expect “lightening fast” broadband here.

I will however agree with the comments about the quality of service. My 512kbps connection only works at fast speeds at night.

  77. killer04 says:

To Jens, they removed the capping thing so now you can download how much
you like. Since i got My.t i downloaded 12 GB on emule in one month.

Stephen the only reason why we complain is because MT is asking too much money for its services which are of poor quality. In other countries you get ADSL for a much cheaper price. So in mauritius as the wage rates are lower than other countries and the ADSL price is higher, we will spend a huge percentage of our income on ADSL for the people who want to have broadband. If we spend too much on ADSL then we wont have enough money for anything else.

  78. jens says:

i heard that some regions of the island like port-louis receive a constant throughput of 30 kb/s after the 1 gb? Is that true? and about how much does the download speed oscillate after the capping??!

  79. killer04 says:

As i mentioned above they removed the capping so you can get a constant download speed unless there are problems with their server as they always have. Port-louis gets a faster speed than the rest of us as they are nearer to Telecom Tower. ADSL requires you to be closer to your ISP to receive a better download speed.

  80. jens says:

    36. What happens if I exceed my guaranteed usage allowance with My.T Surf or My.T Surf Options?

You will not be billed any excess usage made beyond your Usage Allowance.

You will note that My.T Surf Services are intended for normal recreational or educational use by individuals and families and the pricing and network architecture have been designed accordingly. Continuous and recurrent excess of usage allowances by customers may reduce the performance of the network and thus be detrimental to other customers.

In the event, that a My.T customer exceeds her/his usage allowance recurrently, MT will notify the customer recurrent excesses and MT may propose alternative packages to the customers at the appropriate charge.

In case the customer continues to engage in such excesses, MT reserves the right to reduce, suspend or terminate the services to the customer.

Killer04 and others who have largely exceed the download limit, have you got any notification?

  81. armand says:

    30 kb/s ?? thats 240kps still good

Pray god that it work !!!!

  86. vincent says:

Has anyone of you guy or gal read the newspaper “Le Defi” of this Saturday, more precisely on page 7?Because it is written that the price of ADSL in Mauritius is likely going to be reduced by 26% and has already been approved AND internet service providers have to revise their price accordingly. So if i understand well the price for My-t is gonna change as well.In the same article it’s said that the price for ADSL 128kbps is as follows,Rs730 to be reduced to Rs480,Rs780 to be reduced to Rs535 for 512kbps and for 1mbps,Rs1200 to be reduced to Rs1005.

For those having My-t 256kbps same as me,we are being charged for the same price as normal ADSL 128kbps(Wanadoo),so we should look forward if the revised price for us My-t users(mostly 256kbps)will be same as the revised price for ADSL 128kbps,it may sound stupid in the first place but we never knows what MT reserves us because they can say that our connection is twice as a normal 128kbps ADSL so that’s why the price will a bit higher than the Wanadoo ADSL 128kbps.

  87. armand says:

I exceeded my 1Gb on Myt But sill getting 256kps.

  88. Anonymous says:

Its good that the price of ADSL will finally fall as it is way too overpriced!

  89. vincent says:

To all My-y users,i don’t know if you’re aware about that but i’m gonna tell you anyway.Remember i told you earlier that there will be a reduction in ADSL rates, the “funniest” thing is that i just called 8585 to confirm with MT when the new rate will be applied and the person on the line told me that there won’t be any change/reduction for My-t.I told him that in the news it is said that the reduction concerns all ADSL connections but he told me that for My-t it’s different because MT is giving us quite a lot of things as package, namely the decoder(which i never use and i can count on my fingers how many people is really enjoying the free channels offered on the decoder,i think most people has opted for My-t mainly because they could get 256kbps for the price of a 128kbps ADSL and not really for these channels that can be obtained by other means).I think that thew knew that there was going to be reduction in the ADSL rates,so that’s why they made lots of canvassing and promotion for My-t and abolishing the 1GB limit, just to make people sign the one year contract and then these people will be trapped in this one year contract, forced to pay non-reduced ADSL rates.

One more time this shows how Mauritius Telecom SUCKS!!!When people says thatt MT is THIEF,that’s definitely TRUE!!!I knew MT was preparing something very bitter for us My-t users, but not at this level! In Hell MT can go!That’s how this country will never move forward, wherever there’s part of government involved,it’s always like that, taking money in people’s pocket, that’s what they are really good at!

  90. avinash says:

    Hi Vincent,

If this is true (let’s wait for some official confirmation…) then we’ll have to mount a massive protest campaign.

  91. vincent says:

According to what the guy on the 8585 said, the new ADSL rates will normally appear this coming friday on their website and on newspaper. So,let’s wait and see.

Hey Avinash, just give them a call on the 8585,just to tease them somehow and let’s see what they’ll tell you about that. And let’s keep informed about the situation.

If there should be any kind of massive protest campaign,i’m IN!!!

  92. Steevano says:

    Hello,

Avinash first of all your forum is too good. This will become very handly.

I’ve just install MYT (sunday) so far working fine. but yesterday get this problem of P2P which was not connecting at all. I have refer to this site to configure the emule which is very interesting but that did not help me. I’m sharing the site with you may be you can find some stuffs that will help you & share it on the forum.

  93. Anonymous says:

Well i will also be in the campaign if there is one. My.t is way too expensive for this weak connection that we have. Concerning the decoder i am sure that MT can make up for it with the big amount of abnormal profits that it is earning each month.

I hope that the My.T price goes down and that MT stops tricking people like that. We have the right to enjoy a decent internet connection at a decent price!

It will help to clear your IP therefore rather than resetting the livebox just install it & reset the IP using this software. If you need more help, you can email me on steevano@gmail.com & i will try to help you as much as i can.

    Hope this help…

Emule was working fine for me at first then i got the IP problem which afterwards i find it’s solution but you will need the IP Clear (refer to my previous comment) I’ve worked hours on it coz am someone stubborn. I love emule as it gives you not only movies but all kind of ebooks & tutorials that are very rare)

http://www.emule-inside.net/emule/ (it will help you to solve out your router problem, adding ports & much more as well as your firewall configuration)

At least the price of ADSL 128Kb/s should have reduce to Rs 490.
Mauritius Telecom is just thinking how to make money without caring about his customer.
I must wait for a few years to have ADSL under Rs500. For the time being lets only rich people in Mauritius enjoy the ADSL.

  104. killer04 says:

  110. jens says:

Well have you any ideo for the price for 512 kbps? Since mid-day today and till now i’ve not been able to connect with wanadoo ADSL 128 Kbps…
This is really frustating as i depend on the net to work..Any news from Mauritius telecom?? have their servers broken down?

  111. chouaïbe says:

well guys i’ve been reading all your comments..really interesting..actually i too i was really pissed off with MT..i even wrote official letters to the managament (they apparently didn’t receive it; by magic they found it after a couple of days after i sent them the Mauritius Post Registered Letter Receipt), i was even invited to Radio 1 to discuss about the ADSL issue, unfortunately I was busy on that particular day.
being in the legal field, i’d like to tell you that the 1 year contract is totally void; because if you are not satisfied with a particular product, the customer has the right to rescind his contract (unfair contract terms act, unfair contract terms and regulations)UK Law..technically we can use that since we are in the commonwealth.
concerning the mauritian laws, it’s like the ADSL..it’s not up-to-date with the technology.
unfortunately there ain’t any precedent in the high court of mauritius where someone has brought to justice a service provider in the technological field..so, who’ll invest thousands of rupees to bring MT to court euh?
the other issue is that, for sure, the SAFE cable is saturated, it’s logical that we have such a poor service, slow speed until the EASSY cable will be launched in about 2yrs time or more. so, MT has an esacape goat conerning that.
now, knowing the real issue to the technical problems, owing to the limitation of the SAFE, can MT makes such huge publicity when they can’t afford what they mean.
    thats FRAUD my friends.
FRAUD is something punishable by law.
thats where MT has a real problem.
so, i’ll through the media, shortly, do watch out, i’ll be writing some articles concerning that, perhaps, i’ll make a nationwide appeal, that on a particular month, i would ask all people, who doesn’t depend on the ADSL service to WORK, to return it.
there’ll be more developements on that issue.
to me it’s no more a technical problem due to the SAFE saturation, but the lies behind the marketing of their products even if they know that the wouldn’t be able to offer what they say.

In a population of 1.2 million, only 0.8% of Mauritian has adsl.
Let MTML come with his adsl, Mauritius telecom will lose all his client for sure.

Initially i was getting only 1 channel, after changing the antenna direction.. now i’m getting 3 out of 6 channels. When i perform a tnt scan channel sometimes i get only 004 channels detected & i get the message “Reception problem” displayed while trying to play a particular channel !!! I guess the problem is with my antenna… Btw, i have the “l’antenne sapin” & i live in Q.Bornes… i was just wondering whether i need another type of antenna to be able to capture all the 6 channels.

Any1 ever came across this kind of problem???

  118. Steevano says:

    Guys,

There is one thing to be taken into consideration, you might be swapping to MTML as soon as it launch it products but i would suggest that you wait for some times & see how good & reliable will it be. MT has been here for years & we still are having some problem with their connection but now imagine a new ISP. I will suggest that we wait & see if they give a better QUALITY & RELIABLE service. I’m saying so because i chose Nomad instead of MT at first thinking that they will b providing a good service but Nomad is sh*t & i’ve many contacts there who advise me to go to MT as their product are not reliable so this is why am suggesting to wait & see how MTML will provide us with a good service!!

    Cheers,

    Hi Vincent,

No worries will keep you all posted about the change.

What they said not possible!! The person who told you this just dont know what to say. The address is being provided by DHCP so they must be able to exclude this address. I’ve explained this to them…

Anyway i will call them tomorrow & get some feedback from them.

For all those using peer to peer, i will suggest that you disable your network hardware via computer –> properties —> hardware –> device manager –> (disable your hardware & enable it again) this solve out my problem & avoid me from either resetting my machinee or livebox (am using the wireless instead of the network cable)

    Hope this help

I would like to know how many among you are using the USB wireless connection? If so please let me know if MT has given you the driver for it as i can’t see any cd/floppy driver for it & the only thing i have is the driver for the adsl modem!

On my pc I’ve installed a wireless driver which is supposed to be for Dell Latitude D505 but i’ve used it on Dell Inspiron 510m & this is causing some troubles ot me as it gets disconnected at a point of time therefore i would like to try to use the USB but found that i dont have the driver :(. That would be great if someone could help me.

    Cheeers,

Will ADSL128 be reduced anytime soon? I’m tired of waiting for MT to treat their customers as people!
