To summarise, Microsoft is dead thanks to
- Google which is now the new big player with loads of cash,
- Ajax applications like Gmail which showed that the desktop is irrelevant and
- Apple and Linux because thanks to them (I quote) “[a]ll the computer people use Macs or Linux now. Windows is for grandmas, like Macs used to be in the 90s. So not only does the desktop no longer matter, no one who cares about computers uses Microsoft’s anyway.”
Paul Graham concludes his essay with this paragraph:
“I already know what the reaction to this essay will be. Half the readers will say that Microsoft is still an enormously profitable company, and that I should be more careful about drawing conclusions based on what a few people think in our insular little “Web 2.0″ bubble. The other half, the younger half, will complain that this is old news.”

I saw his post earlier and I can’t think anything but a link bait/troll. It’s like John C Dvorak with his anti-Mac’ism.
How dead is dead? Like when Microsoft killed IBM (Windows vs OS/2)?
IBM is still here today and Microsoft will be still here tomorrow.
It is not a zero-sum game.

Why is it that you’ve linked Linux to Kubuntu? There are other distros that are reliable too, even if Ubuntu actually garners more community support than the rest.

Because I use and I like Kubuntu
I am, of course, aware of the other distros. It’s only that I find it more sensible to link to a distro than to, say, linux.org.

Microsoft is not dead.
Paul Graham took the perspective of a new startup founder; Microsoft is no longer at the bleeding edge, thus no longer a threat to the typical entrepreneur.
Microsoft will remain profitable for years to come. What could you do with $40B and an army of researchers, lawyers, engineers and business types?

Change of gear for the better informed. Ubuntu might still sound like a lost tribe to some and heaven to others. With an IT policy in the face like Mauritius prones to be, Microsoft should be good enough for digging out gold for new immigrants. But hey Mauritians are less gullible now. Welcome the tethering wave of change with new blood infusing the system and abandoning it to look for greener pastures like you. What will happen to the next generation ?
