Liverpool FC in 2020-2021: a few possible additions

16 February 2020 By Avinash Meetoo Leave a Comment

It looks certain that Liverpool FC will win the Premiership for the first time in 30 years.

Given that the team is already very good (and this is a major understatement) and that the finances are good (and this is another major understatement), Liverpool FC has quite a lot of money to buy 1-2 world class players.

I believe that Liverpool will focus on its midfield this year.

Georginio Wijnaldum is a fantastic player but he is nearly 30 and will have to be replaced relatively soon. I reckon that Kai Havertz, who is left-footed, is the ideal replacement for him. Alongside Naby Keita, who is right-footed, this midfield looks very balanced and creative. Of course, Fabinho also has an important role to play, especially when Andrew Robertson or Trend Alexander-Arnold are attacking.

Captain fantastic, Jordan Henderson, and James Milner will still play important roles next year but, maybe, will feature less.

As for the attackers, Jadon Sancho would be a great cover for either Mohamed Salah or Sadio Mané. As he is right-footed, he might be used more on the left so that he can cut in when attacking. I wonder whether a similar left-footed player exists so that he can be used on the right? The likes of Antoine Griezmann, Bernardo Silva, Leroy Sané or Ousmane Dembélé might fit the bill but they are surely unavailable. But, now with the EUFA judgement against Manchester City, maybe it might be possible to land either Bernardo Silva or Leroy Sané?

Finding someone else like Roberto Firmino is a little bit more difficult. Ideally, Paulo Dybala would be perfect. But someone like Joaquín Correa or even Ayoze Pérez would be useful as well. And, of course, we should not forget about Divock Origi.

As for our kids, based on what I’ve seen, Curtis Jones, Pedro Chirivella and Neco Williams are ready. And, possibly, Harry Wilson as well.

The future looks bright.

Happy New Year (xīn nián kuài lè)

25 January 2020 By Avinash Meetoo 5 Comments

My father in law, who is no more now, was from China.

His name was Chan Shiow Shen (Chan was the clan and Shiow Shen was his name) and he came to Mauritius around 1950. For some reason, he also became known as Ah Koon. A few years later, he met Asmah, my mother in law, who was Muslim.

They got married, got kids and Asmah decided to become a Catholic. She became Bernadette and Shiow Shen became Donald. By that time, Chan Shiow Shen had become the family name and, therefore, the two had become Bernadette Chan Shiow Shen and Ah-Koon Donald Chan Shiow Shen. Must have been funny for Shiow Shen…

One of the kids was of course Marie Christina Chan Shiow Shen who was born in 1975 and who was baptized when she was a kid. The others were Dany, Liliane, Annette and Dominique.

In 2014, Shiow Shen had his major achievement. He went back to China on his own for a few weeks to meet his family after more than 60 years!!! When he came back, he was immensely proud and happy.

He passed away one year later in December 2015.

Two months ago, at the beginning of December 2019, Liliane, one of Christina’s sisters, felt an urge to remember Shiow Shen, four years after he had passed away.

Together with Dominique, Christina’s little brother, they took the responsibility to organise an ancestor veneration ceremony (shèn zhōng zhuÄ« yuÇŽn) for their dad.

We were all quite emotional on that day.

Anyway, on this day of the Chinese New Year 2020, I felt the need to write a bit about Shiow Shen who was always a very nice guy to me.

So Happy New Year (xīn nián kuài lè) to all of you and enjoy life to the full.

Happy 20th wedding anniversary, Christina

8 January 2020 By Avinash Meetoo Leave a Comment

Today, 8 January 2020, Christina and I are celebrating our twenty years of marriage.

I’ll be honest. Our wedding feels like yesterday. Of course, we now have a daughter, Anya, who is 17 and a son, Kyan, who is 15. But Christina is so extraordinarily fresh and beautiful everyday that, in my mind, I’m still this young man at university having just discovered the meaning of love…

I am really looking forward to the next 20 years with you, Christina.
