What do you think of the yearly system…

… at the University of Mauritius?

More precisely, what is your opinion on:

Having one year long modules?
Having exams at the end of the year only?
Having three hours long exams?
Having six yearly modules per year?
etc.

Another thing I want to know is your opinion on the number of students in a class. What do you think of classes with 55-60 students?

I really want to know.

Thanks to all who have commented. We have decided to take the matter at departmental level.
I have deleted a number of comments which are not directly relevant to what I was asking. For example, I have deleted comments which explicitly cite names of lecturers even if they are positive.

The University of Mauritius Search Engine

While discussing with some colleagues the other day, I realised that the University of Mauritius website does not have a working search facility. I also realised that it would be nice to be able to search within all UoM websites (like, for example, the CSE website, the Radio Telescope website, etc.) in addition to the main website of the university.

With some Google magic to the rescue, I am proud to announce the official release of

which I’ve called the University of Mauritius Search Engine.

Microsoft finally dies…

… and Paul Graham proves it.

Hip! Hip! Hurray!

To summarise, Microsoft is dead thanks to

Google which is now the new big player with loads of cash,
Ajax applications like Gmail which showed that the desktop is irrelevant and
Apple and Linux because thanks to them (I quote) “[a]ll the computer people use Macs or Linux now. Windows is for grandmas, like Macs used to be in the 90s. So not only does the desktop no longer matter, no one who cares about computers uses Microsoft’s anyway.”

Paul Graham concludes his essay with this paragraph:

“I already know what the reaction to this essay will be. Half the readers will say that Microsoft is still an enormously profitable company, and that I should be more careful about drawing conclusions based on what a few people think in our insular little “Web 2.0″ bubble. The other half, the younger half, will complain that this is old news.”
