Back to film photography

20 September 2010 By Avinash Meetoo 17 Comments

Photo from Flickr

One month ago, I went back to basics: I bought a roll of Fuji Superia 200 film and revived my dad’s Olympus Mju II compact camera.

The experience has been great. As you can see in the above picture, the Mju II is still working well (even if the photo is blurred.) I love the colours and Anya looks beautiful.

Since then, I’ve asked a good friend of mine (Thanks, Patrice!) to buy a 50mm fixed lens for me and I’ve revived my 12 years old Canon EOS 500N film SLR.

I’ve observed that what I like most is to be limited to 36 photos as opposed to the infinite number of photos one can take using a digital camera. Definitely, less is more.

Very nice candid shot of Anya.

The dynamic range of film is so much better; with a digital camera, you would not distinguish the white of the chaise from the white of her top.

    I agree.

Film is different. Not necessarily better but the colours are different. Most digital photos are “in the face” whereas photos taken with film have more muted colours which, well, feel more peaceful (for lack of a better word) after some time.

How is it practically possible? :S I would like to understand that idea behind ;)

A really nice picture. It shows that it is a really good quality camera. :)

Correct me if I am wrong I’m no expert, but seeing Anya’s picture you get the feeling that films give a better depth due to more colour nuances (the image is more lively)… on the other hand with digital pictures you have an impression of flatness…

What do you mean? Less is more?

When you have a roll of 36, you are forced to think and observe more before actually taking the picture. And I have to say that this generally produces better pictures. Something else is about having to wait for the whole roll to be developed before seeing the pictures: this increases their “desirability” :-)

The camera, an Olympus Mju II, is ok. But everything depends on the photographer :-)

    @Ashvin

Quality digital gear (e.g. a Canon EOS-550D or a Nikon D5000) with the same kind of quality lens (e.g. a 28mm f/2.8) should allow a competent photographer to get the same kind of picture. But we tend to have crap digital cameras (e.g. my own tiny Canon A540 — the A stands for Amateur after all…)

Sometimes if we think well, simple gadgets make us live simple. In today’s world of over-consumption, returning back to basics and simplicity sometimes gives us less stress.

For example, I currently use a symbian Nokia smart phone, but I recently bought a simple Rs1000 talk and text phone. I found it so amazing to use a simple phone with simple capabilities(it offered 2 times more talk hours).

You’re right: stress is killing us. We should all aim at reducing stress…

Nikon D90 beats D5000. My brother is into photography and says, when the image is from D5000 is zoomed, quality is loss while D90 retains that.

SLR has done pretty good stuff since the camera sees what the human eye sees :D

My father has got around 2-3 manual cameras like Minolta, Leica but Tech has really reved up photography. It’s a cool hobby and makes you forget everything when you’re taking a pic

Equipment is secondary. The most important thing is to have good eyes and good taste :-)

For those without good taste, the pleasure comes from mastering the technique :-)
