I am married to Christina and we have two wonderful kids, Kyan & Anya. In case you are wondering, Noulakaz means “our home” in my native language, créole. I’ve been blogging since March 2004.
I am the Founder and CEO of Knowledge Seven, a Linux, Mobile and Web Agency in Mauritius.
I am a Computer Scientist and also an amateur photographer and musician. I use a Google Nexus One Android smartphone, Apple computers with Mac OS X, Linux desktops and servers and a lot of open source software. I am well known in geekland as the founder of the Linux User Group of Mauritius. there is something in the way you lecture that doesn’t make the module boring

More seriously, it’s important to comply with whatever one has abided to whether knowingly or unknowingly (i.e. when one just clicks on the “I Agree” button without reading the legalese…)

Yes I have stopped being a lecturer. I’ve founded my own company and expect to start operations by the end of the month. For hosting, I use Slicehost. It’s rather expensive but I get a virtual server on which I can pretty much do anything I want. Previously I was an ICDSoft customer.

I am not sure I understand. Sorting by what criteria? WordPress supports both posts and pages but, as far as I know, pages cannot contain posts.

You need to understand that a blog (such as the one provided by wordpress.com) lists your posts chronologically from newest to oldest. You seem to have your nine newest posts displayed (which is the default configuration for WordPress.) You can change this from nine to, say, three (to only have your three newest posts displayed) in the settings (check in Settings / Reading)

Hello..I am just finishing my last year of Electronics and Communications Engineering and am very interested to work in the IT network and security fields. But, firstly I am aware that I may have to do some professional courses. As for networking, I think that the CCNA Security course will be good. But I am not aware where in mauritius I may have this training. Also, I want to learn some linux…I have found the CompTia Linux+ at an institution but I think the RedHat one would be better. Can you please give me some advice on which courses will be perfect to start a career with and where can I do them in Mauritius? Thanks.

My own company, Knowledge Seven Ltd, provides courses in Web development and, as a matter of fact, there is a Web Development with PHP & MySQL course starting on 16 November 2009 and which will run on five consecutive Mondays.
Feel free to contact me if you need additional information.
As you can see, this is a “normal” course i.e. it’s not an online course. It is possible that this course be run online in the future but this is not currently the case. I don’t know anyone in Mauritius running such courses 100% online. But there are surely a lot of international training institutions doing that. Use Google to find them.

Your best bet is to read a good book on PHP (say PHP and MySQL web development by Luke Welling and Laura Thomson) and find solutions to the exercises given in the book. From your comment, I gather you’ll need the Apache web server, PHP, MySQL and phpMyAdmin. All of those are open source products and are readily available for all platforms…
… alternatively, you can come and follow my course on Web Development with PHP and MySQL which is starting today :-)

Donc si to pe gagne 50 kilobits/s, to pe gagne zis 10% to bandwidth. Par contre, si to pe gagne 50 kilobytes/s (1 byte = 8 bits) donc, a ce moment la, pas capav plaigner :-)

Of course, you can connect to someone’s wireless network if (i) you have the proper password (ii) he/she has pressed the REG button on his/her Livebox while you attempt to connect and (iii) he/she is happy with that :-)

Hi Mr Avinash,seen your blog ,very interesting .But one thing that really caught me is the photograph of an Amiga 500.I got an A1200 which I used for video titling but now th PC can be harnessed to do it by some soft . There is one thing that linux users does not talk
about is the multimedia part of it. Can we not edit some pictures ,draw,edit some video footage etc?I think we can,but rarely someone can talk about it.When we talk Linux ,some words like lan,router ,sudo,console,kernel,compile, which certainly drive away newcomers.I think that you can do something in this field because you know what an amiga is.

We should talk more about using Linux as a desktop OS because, well, most people tend to focus on the server aspects.

I think Ubuntu or Mint are very good distributions for beginners. Fedora is nice too.

I install the Ubuntu distro,but one thing I would like to know how to install drivers end with th “run” extension,like the nvidia driver named “NVIDIA-Linux-x86-256.44.run”
You should open a terminal and execute the file with “sudo sh filename”
But I should say that Ubuntu supports restricted drivers (for Nvidia graphics cards namely) and you should really use those in preference…

h avinash. it is really nice to have you here sharing your valuable knowledge . i have a huawei e 220 modem which i used in uk. there i could connect to mobile broadband using various sim. here i don’t have the setting s so that i can use my orange sim. there is displayed “wcdma cell+” but i cant connect to the internet . i hope u will guide me through

I don’t using images for such purposes. I like to be able to copy and paste emails (or anything else for that matter) from websites. Of course, here, the person doing that will have to “correct” the email address further but that’s quite straightforward.
To be frank, maybe I’ll just edit the text and change the obfuscated addresses to the real ones. Spammers already know all my email addresses and GMail has a bloody good spam filter :-)

Yeah. But on the other hand, I’ve been using that email for ages now (more than 7 years) and, since I get thousands and thousands of spam filtered by Gmail, I guess all spammers in the world know that.
And, now that I think of it, if more spammers send spam to me and some get through Google’s spam filter, I am in a position to help Google make its spam filter better just by clicking on Report Spam :-)
