Buying a new scanner
Today I’m buying a Canon CanoScan N650U scanner. It’s satisfies my needs perfectly.
(1) It uses a Contact Image Sensor instead of a CCD which make it very slim and not power hungry at all (it is powered through the USB cable !)
(2) It works perfectly with Linux. I’ve found this nice HOWTO on LinuxQuestions.org.
(3) It has an adequate 600dpi optical resolution. I’ll use it mostly to scan my 10x15cm photos at 300dpi for archival purposes.
(4) It costs only Rs. 2000 + VAT
Expect some nice additions to the photo gallery in the coming days

I have, like you, a N650U but it has just died (now fails calibration). Shame as it was a fantastic scanner. what would you recommend as a replacement?

Any cheap scanner will do. What about a Canon CanoScan LIDE 25?
Will that work as well with SANE etc?
Having said that of course, I note that here: http://www.sane-project.org/sane-mfgs.html#Z-CANON it is down as a supported device.
I’ll have a look, as CANON has been good so far.
Hmm. None seem to be available but I’m looking at a CanoScan LIDE 60, which the SANE website also has down as well supported. Thanks for your help!
After all that – good old Argos stumped up with a LIDE 25 which as far as I can tell is pretty much identical to my old one and works very well. Thanks for your suggestion, I followed it up.
