Liverpool’s future is bright

15 March 2006 By Avinash Meetoo 8 Comments

While browsing LFChistory.net today, I came across a nice page with most current and previous Liverpool players. By supplementing the information with some other details from the official Liverpool website, I found out this :

Born in Players
1988 Jack Hobbs, Paul Anderson, Miquel Roque, Godwin Antwi, Adam Hammill
1987 Besian Idrizaj, Antonio Barragan, Danny Guthrie, Calum Woods
1986 Lee Peltier, Danny O’Donnell, Paul Willis, David Martin
1985 Ramon Calliste, Robbie Foy, James Smith, Scott Carson, David Mannix, Carl Medjani, David Raven, Mohamed Sissoko
1984 Darren Potter, Daniel Agger, Florent Sinama-Pongolle, Anthony Le Tallec, Zak Whitbread
1982 Neil Mellor, Jose Reina
1981 Stephen Warnock, Xabi Alonso, Djibril Cisse, Chris Kirkland, Peter Crouch
1980 John Arne Riise, Jan Kromkamp, Steven Gerrard, Djimi Traore

Now, among those young players, there are some obvious world-class players : Steven Gerrard (1980), Xabi Alonso (1981), Jose Reina (1982) and Mohamed Sissoko (1985).

But what is very very interesting is that Liverpool has a large number of very highly rated young players who, if they make it at the highest level, can have the world at their feet.

I’m thinking of Jack Hobbs (1988), Paul Anderson (1988), Adam Hammill (1988), Antonio Barragan (1987), Scott Carson (1985), David Mannix (1985), David Raven (1985) and Daniel Agger (1984) who is Sami Hyypia’s natural successor. Mind you, I’ve never seen them play (apart from Daniel Agger) but I’ve read some very positive reports about them…

The future is bright for Liverpool :-)

Firefox extensions that I use

13 March 2006 By Avinash Meetoo 4 Comments

As you can see, I am currently running Firefox 1.5.0.1 as my web browser. Here are the extensions that I have installed :

  • Image Zoom
  • Fasterfox
  • Adblock – perfect for blocking, you’ve guessed correctly, ads! It can also block annoying Flash animations…
  • FlashGot – connects KGet (which I use as a download manager) and Firefox.
  • GooglePreview – one of my favourites. It displays thumbnails of the websites returned when you search for something using Google.
  • Colourful Tabs
  • del.icio.us – you need to try the del.icio.us service. I’m sure you’ll be hooked. Check the popular links.
  • PDF Download
  • Download Statusbar
  • Wizz RSS News Reader – check it out. It’s a very good RSS aggregator.
  • Reveal
  • Gmail space – use your Gmail account like an online 2Gb disk! It works!!!

By itself, Firefox is really nice. But combined with extensions, it just blows away that piece of crap software from our friends (not) from Redmond :

I’m running Kubuntu 6.04 Dapper Drake

9 March 2006 By Avinash Meetoo 3 Comments

I’ve dist-upgraded my AMD64 Kubuntu Linux installation from 5.10 Breezy to 6.04 Dapper Drake (even if the latter is still Beta). I had to solve some small issues but I suppose that this is what happens when one uses Beta versions :-)

  • Dynamically loaded firmware (for example, firmware for my USB Alcatel Speedtouch modem) MUST be placed in /lib/firmware/{kernelversion}/ instead of /lib/hotplug/firmware/ as was the case in 5.10
  • The default configuration of KDE is not nice at all : new windows do not automatically get the focus. For example, pressing Alt-F2 to bring the “Run Command” window does not allow you to type a command right away because of the lack of focus. Solving the problem is easy, just change the “Focus stealing prevention level” from Low to none as shown here :

  • When logging in KDE, the splash screen was not displayed properly because a required package (ksplash-engine-moodin) was not installed (I had to do it manually)
  • This is not a bug but a feature it seems to me :-) NTP (client) is not installed by default. I need to find out why.

By the way, a drake is a male duck :
