Hi Avinash

Thought I'd leave my impressions on the iPhone 3G-S, that I saw on Friday.

1. Form factor identical to the iPhone 3G
2. Lots of new built-in apps: Voice Control, Compass, etc
3. Slightly faster, when loading Google Maps, etc.
4. Video capability
5. Autofocus camera; you touch the screen at your desired focus point
6. Compass app: pretty but not entirely useful
7. Voice control: slow, impractical and gimmicky

Verdict: save your money. Marginal evolution, not revolution. The only benefits for me were the autofocus camera that allows clear photos of whiteboards and documents, and possible HSDPA speeds (though AT&T is not rolling these out until later this year in the US, and NOT allowing iPhone tethering). Not worth spending money on.

What is the use of an iPhone when Mauritius cannot buy professional applications from Apple stores ?

I have an iPhone 3G 16 giggs and without professional applications, my iPhone is as good as an ordinary phone or worse. Safari cannot download nothing. My iPhone email cannot create folders to help categorise my mails. I cannot attach pdf or Excel files in my iPhone mails.

So is this a GREAT BUSINESS PHONE ? Who can help ? Thank you.

Just to add up to the frenzy. The iPhone will be launched in Mauritius this Friday (December 19, 2008). The launching ceremony, an event organised by Mauritius Telecom and Orange (of course), will be held at Le Ravin. Too bad it's an invitation only event :(

I also heard a rumour that they're doing work on Exchange integration. That was the one major thing missing for business class acceptance. Not that Avinash should care too much about that ;-) If they get that right, RIM's going to die

Make sure the version sold in Mauritius is the Worldwide (US/Asia/Africa) 3G one, not the North American 3G/HSDPA standard. The US uses a different frequency for out of band data. Trust me I've had that problem! (in reverse though - only got Edge on my UK model 3G phone in America)
