That is not so good. I'm currently (21:03 9/6/07) getting 22.9kB/s using apt-get to ubuntu repos in the US. It should be in the region of 40-50 but I have patchy wireless reception. My room is quite far from the AP with lots of concrete and metal in between. If I hold the antenna in the "right" place, the speed shoots up to 40kB/s.

I'll try to run some "proper" experiments, a bit later.

This is using a 512kbps Wannadoo ADSL connection.

It's 23:07 right now and I'm downloading the latest version of DrScheme at 5.5 kilobytes/s on my 256kbit/s line (so I'm getting around 25% of what I am supposed to have)

Some interesting comments here. I'm not sure that MT have a policy of making customers switch to the MyT product, although I could certainly see why they could want to do this. It gives them the possibility to sell their VOD and telephone value-added services to you.

The problem may be that Business customers are given preferential QoS. Do you notice speed increases during the night when compared to daytime usage? Also what I will say is that a Download Manager made a significant improvement to my download speeds.

I wonder if the grass is really greener on the other side...So far, I haven't heard only positive reports about MyT's 'impressive' bandwidth.

I'm not totally convinced my issues will be resolved if I switch to MyT.

BTW, according to speedtest.net, for the people testing their download speeds on the site, the global average download rate is 3462 kb/s and the african average is 611 kb/s... this shows how far behind we lag actually...

@Selven, ya dunno why... MT is determined to make people move from the Wanadoo ADSL to MyT... Seems that's something they are being "ordered" [they would surely deny this...] by their French owners... First they had download cap on their MyT, that discouraged many people moving... then they removed the capping, and they called everyone who did refuse the free-switch-to-MyT offer for that reason to vent the merits of MyT yet again... [I think some ppl might have accepted just to get them off their backs actually! lol!]

That's when I switched, basically because of the local 2 MB connection for local online gaming... That's the only positive side of my MyT Surf 512 or whatever... Shit! Oh no no no! That even is crap... Why is there no specification for local upload rate on the MyT site or whatever? Some people get 512 kbps, most just 384 kbps... pffft... I'm one of the latter... pffft...

Therefore downloading with the "Magical, awesome" 2 MB local connection using some direct transfer program or whatever locally, most of the time, the highest speed you would get is 38 KB/s because of the poor upload rate of your fellow MyT-subscribed friend... Even the local connection is much too much disproportionate... We can't even use that as we would wish... Downloading a file from a fellow local friend costs more time than downloading internationally with my 512K connection... lolz... [dunno whether I should laugh, cry, or get mad...]

I wonder till when Mauritians will bear this... but anyways, those who have always been stuck with their dial ups will just see the ADSL speed as amazing, they won't even care looking whether the connection is as they have paid for... How would you make them realize that when they just have just understood how to click, double-click?

quoted from David
The file is about 1GB and on my ADSL 512k, I got only 36MB in 4 hours!

Telecom plus has been giving such types of service lately, that's why i shifted from telecomplus to myt. Actually.. i think telecomplus is making people frustrated for a reason.. there must be some marketing behind this... probably forcing ppl to shift to myt? but why?

Actually, you can download/subscribe to any free podcasts from the iTunes Music Store irrespective of your country! You cannot however purchase tracks due to copyright limitations and label agreements.

Now the problem is that the speed really s*cks! The file is about 1GB and on my ADSL 512k, I got only 36MB in 4 hours! At this rate, I hopefully will finish it someday before I die!! ;)

Alternatively, I may have to use P2P to get it...but then I suspect MT is doing traffic shaping to limit usage of P2P transfers.

On a side note, also check out:

Some great free tutorials/podcast! An easy way to learn about new software for OS X!

Thanks David.

I'll check that URL at home (I don't have my MacBook with me right now) but I don't think that we can download things from iTunes from Mauritius...

I'll let you know.
