Is this (only) coincidence? I am a Flickr addict now…

An update: The problem we are all having is due to the earthquake that has occured near Taiwan this morning… I hope that the contestants from the two Taiwanese teams and their friendly coach who we met at the ACM-ICPC contest in Kanpur are OK…

A second update: Flickr, del.icio.us and Google are quick again! So either the routers have been (re)set or they have learnt to use better routes… IP rocks :-)

I don’t know about you but my Internet connection is (relatively) crap today. Some websites are as slow as molasses:

and some are perfectly normal (i.e I manage to transfer around 25KB/s on my 256Kbit/s ADSL line):

I don’t know what to deduce… It seems fishy that Flickr, del.icio.us and especially Google have technical problems at the same time right now. So I can only say that the problem is here in Mauritius (can someone from abroad check those sites?). Can be a faulty proxy server… Or is it the sign of a purposely faulty proxy server?

I have been having the same problem since about 1 week or more. Even my downloads on HTTP are slow. On megaupload and on rapidshare i have been getting 27 kb/s instead of 60 for about 1 week now. I telephone MT and they said that nothing is wrong with them. They said that it was the sites which were slow. But i know that it isnt true, the problem is with MT.

    Works fine from here.

Indeed there’s a prob Avinash, seems an international link is down due to the earhquake in Taiwan.

There have been an earthquake in Asia this morning, GMT+4. As a result MT’s SAFE connectivitiy to Asia is down while that to the west (i.e Africa) is in a functional state. This is due to a fiber optic underwater cable being ruptured.

MT is privileging its business customers with dedicated access. Nomad’s connections are saturated and thus very slow.

aadil, the ruptured cable is still unrepared? Damn, what the hell are they doing?

  6. Eddy Young says:

Kudos to MT for issuing an announcement, but it would have been better if they gave a timeframe for resolving the problem.

Having done my ‘ins’ and ‘outs’ on the web these past few days, I can deduce that yes perhaps there is a faulty proxy server roaming around…

I take the example of youtube; I sought for a particular video during the past 6 days, but no result of the video (not there supposedly, but believe me in fact it was there). Magical…today I’ve done the same thing (i.e. searching that specific video) and boom the video was there; but mysteriously the details of that video revealed that it was added/uploaded 5 days ago!!!!

    ????!!!!!

    So what to deduce here??

    …Perhaps a faulty proxy server…
